After rumors of separation and plenty of speculation online from the rest of the Married At First Sight cast, it has been confirmed that Erik Lake and Virginia Coombs are getting divorced, and their paperwork is freshly signed. With little surprise from fans, the couple endured a number of hardships during MAFS season 12, as well as in their personal lives afterward. Despite the inevitability of their divorce, Married At First Sight viewers will certainly be disappointed in yet another divorce. The show's past season ending in less marriage and more heartbreak than ever before.

While the couple shared many sweet moments on camera, it simply was not enough in the end. After the filming of MAFS, the couple encountered numerous roadblocks in their marriage, such as rumors of Virginia’s unfaithfulness to Erik, concerns over Virginia’s possible addiction struggles, and multiple arguments online. Despite all the hard work that the couple put into their marriage over the course of the series, Erik and Virginia’s differences ended up being too much, leading to several detrimental issues for the couple.

The @mafsfan account on Instagram revealed first glimpses of the divorce papers for Married at First Sight couple Erik and Virginia. The profile claims that this shocking screenshot is of the “settlement agreement signed” and mentions that this divorce “won’t be final until [the] judge signs,” exposing alleged details about Erik and Virginia’s upcoming divorce. After a closer look at the document, it appears that the divorce was requested by Erik, not by Virginia. The paperwork was signed on July 12, the news being released 10 days after. While the couple has yet to release any sensitive information regarding the reason for the split, fans can only assume that the events of the season and the handful of allegations afterward may be the source of Erik and Virginia’s marital problems.

Married At First Sight season 12 has been a tragic, divorce-filled season of a show that is dedicated to finding love connections through scientifically arranged marriages. While glimpses of love may have been present for some couples, marriage was not a result. Throughout the season, Erik and Virginia overcame a number of difficult situations and persevered after filming wrapped. Yet with scandals and cruelty online involving Virginia, the couple was not able to overcome these issues and contrasting points of view. Whether it was infidelity, addiction, or simply incompatibility, Erik and Virginia have chosen to part ways, unable to commit to their promise of for better or for worse.

The details of the divorce are uncertain, as is the blame. While Erik has chosen to end the marriage, the decision could certainly be mutual. The two were unable to agree on even the easiest of details, such as living arrangements and squabbles over friend groups. Even though the end of their marriage is a dismal one, this divorce may be the best for both Erik and Virginia, allowing each to find a partner with similar life goals and lifestyles and move on from Married At First Sight.
