Two Marriage Story teaser trailers show the different perspectives of the married couple played by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, who has said that the film is one of his most personal projects, it is already being discussed as a possible awards contender.

Announced in 2017, Marriage Story will tell the story of a divorce that gradually devolves from amicable to tumultuous. Charlie (Driver), a New York theater director, and Nicole (Johansson), an actress, find themselves caught up in an escalating series of rash responses, fueled by resentment and enduring sense of love. The proceedings are further complicated by the fact that custody of the couple’s son hangs in the balance. The dramedy boasts an all-star cast, with Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta all portraying lawyers that drive the chaos and messiness in their own ways and for their own benefit. With the movie showing at the Venice Film Festival later this month, two teasers have been released that add some texture to the story.

In a move that mirrors the complex and conflicted nature of divorce, Netflix dropped two companion trailers that share similar but ultimately different views. In one, titled "What I Love About Nicole," a voiceover by Driver’s character muses on all the things he loves about his wife. In another, titled "What I Love About Charlie," there’s a voice over by Johansson’s character that lists many of her husband’s virtues. With this approach, Baumbach said in a statement, he wanted to honor the fact that there were many sides to every story and that it was necessary to embrace the different viewpoints in order to arrive at a shared truth. Baumbach, who has directed notable titles like Frances Ha and The Meyerowitz Stories, has spoken openly about the personal process of making the film. While he drew from the memories of his parents’ divorce, and his own painful memories of splitting with actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, the director also noted that he reached out to friends and many others in an attempt to better understand something that is not always openly explored. Baumbach also complimented his two main stars and called Driver, with whom he’s collaborated frequently, a great friend.

One of the things that has made the film so anticipated among audiences, and what is evident in the trailers, is how the project is stacked with nominees for Oscars and Golden Globes. Johansson has earned multiple nominations, including for Lost in Translation. Driver nabbed an Oscar nomination for his supporting turn in BlacKkKlansman. With the deeply personal themes of Marriage Story, available on Netflix and select theaters this fall, the cast and crew will certainly be in contention for the big awards.
