Official Synopsis for Marlon Wayans' Found Footage Horror Parody

Any time an actor in Hollywood is uncertain about their next career move, it seems the best thing to do is return to what you know. Sometimes, that's a sequel to a fan favorite film or a spin-off to a popular TV series. For Marlon Wayans, it's a return to the world of horror parody.

Just as Scary Movie and its sequels lampooned the horror trends of the late '90s and early 2000s (Scream, Saw, etc.), this new film - previously titled Smart Ass - will tackle the ongoing trend of found footage films epitomized with the Paranormal Activity franchise.

According to Coming Soon, the film will follow newlyweds Malcolm (Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins, who appeared alongside Wayans in Dance Flick) as they move into their new home, where Kisha soon becomes possessed. This leaves Malcom with the unenviable task of trying to save both his wife and marriage from evil spirits.

Check out the official synopsis below:

From the creators of 'Scary Movie' comes another hilarious horror spoof, a parody of the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise. When newlyweds Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) move into their dream house, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that's haunted, but his wife that is possessed with spirits - or as Malcolm calls it - "relationship baggage." Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghost busters to rid her of the demon, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his marriage... or his sex life for that matter.

Wayans - who will co-write the film with Rick Alvarez - last appeared onscreen in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and is one of the many cast members not returning for the now-delayed sequel. Since then, he has been attached to a number of projects, ranging from a Richard Pryor biopic to White Chicks 2.

Marlon Wayans Scary Movie

Frankly, there is a distinct possibility of overkill here with regards to poking fun at the found footage genre. It has already been rumored that Scary Movie 5 (starring Ashley Tisdale) will reference the Paranormal Activity franchise, and it should be noted that the original Scary Movie featured a parody of The Blair Witch Project, the grandfather of found footage horror films as we know them today.

On the plus side, even if this upcoming project turns out to be a dud, at least it can highlight just how overused this style of filmmaking has become.

Stay tuned for more details on the as-yet-untitled project as they become available.
