Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday teased some of the capabilities of Meta's much talked-about upcoming VR headset, Project Cambria. The headset was confirmed at Facebook Connect 2021 last October before being teased multiple times over the past several months. While the exact details about the device are still sketchy, there are a few tidbits that have become public knowledge, either due to leaks or through official teasers from Zuckerberg and Meta.

The Project Cambria headset is expected to launch later this year, although there's no exact ETA just yet. What's more, Zuckerberg has already made it clear that the pricing will be at the high end of the spectrum, which means it might be more of niche device compared to some of the other available options in the market. Of course, Meta is not the only tech giant working on a new AR/VR headset. Apple is believed to be working on a mixed-reality headset as well, but it is said to have been delayed until next year.

Mark Zuckerberg showed off Meta's Project Cambria VR headset via a short video clip posted on Facebook. The video shows the Facebook co-founder wearing the device and taking in a VR experience. The headset itself was pixelated to prevent anyone from getting a look at its design, but the video did show off a couple of glimpses of a mixed-reality experience called The World Beyond. In a short description accompanying the video, Zuckerberg said that the demo was created using the Presence Platform, which was announced last fall and has been built to help developers create "mixed reality experiences that blend physical and virtual worlds."

'The World Beyond' Demo Is Coming Soon To App Lab

The experience showcased in the Project Cambria demo involves some kind of a little blue virtual creature that Zuckerberg seemed to pet and play with at one stage. According to Zuckerberg, a demo version of The World Beyond will soon come to the App Lab, but a "full-color passthrough version" will only be available on the Project Cambria headset. Zuckerberg did not reveal any more information about the headset but said that more details will be revealed soon.

As part of its growing emphasis on the metaverse, Meta is reportedly working on multiple new AR/VR headsets alongside Project Cambria. That includes two new versions of the Quest headset that will reportedly release in 2023 and 2024. As for Meta's all-important Project Cambria, it is said to offer advanced AR capabilities, longer battery life, and a user-friendly design that will help make it comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
