Will Mark Millar's New Comic Be His First Netflix TV Show?

Netflix have revealed their first new Millarworld title called The Magic Order

Ever since Mark Millar announced that he'd sold his comic book company to Netflix, fans have been eagerly awaiting the news of their first project. Now we know it is a brand new comic book series called The Magic Order, which will see the Scottish writer team up with artist Olivier Coipel.

Of course, as Netflix is most famous for its original TV shows and movies, one has to wonder if the comic book will be the first Millarworld title to be given the live-action treatment. Given Millar's comments to Entertainment Weekly, it certainly sounds like The Magic Order will be:

"If something was turned into a movie, that was a lovely novelty in the past, whereas now when I’m creating stories as a member of staff, I need to keep my eye on the whole picture. We’re thinking of these as movies and TV shows, and the ones we feel would be great for comics will also appear as comic books."

The Magic Order, like most of Millarworld's comics, is a cross-genre project - in this case bringing together fantasy and crime. It follows five families of magicians who are "sworn to protect our world for generations [and] must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one,” according to the Netflix press release. “By day they live among us as our neighbors, friends and co-workers, but by night they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness…unless the darkness gets them first.”

Millar says The Magic Order looks more like "The Sopranos than Lord of the Rings" so it definitely has the right style to work as a TV show. And there's certainly a market for this sort of genre fare, especially on Netflix; they're getting ready to release their original fantasy/crime movie Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, that sees humans and fantasy creatures working alongside one another.

Mark Millar comic book covers Kingsman, Wanted, Kick-Ass

TV-wise, shows like The Magicians and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency veer into fantastical territory but with the mob themes of The Magic Order, a TV version would be rather unique and more adult in nature than the likes of Harry Potter.

Of course, the first Netflix Original from Millarworld may be something completely different, be that another original property or adaptation of prior work; with a serious number of titles to choose from, there's certainly no end to the possibilities of new TV shows and films inspired by Millarworld's shared universe.

That said, considering how it's leading the charge, The Magic Order is sure to get a lot of eyes on it. When and if Netflix plan to turn the comic book into a TV show or film is unclear, but the streaming service could well detail plans for Netflix Original The Magic Order series around the time of its Spring 2018 release to piggyback off the buzz.
