Update: Mark Hamill clarified his answer on Twitter, noting he was joking in his original answer. Baywatch was also in consideration.
Add Mark Hamill to the list of celebrities endorsing Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie. The controversial adaptation of the DC Comic series has become a prime example of divisive films growing more appreciated over time. Long before Man of Steel or Batman v Superman stirred up controversy for being ‘too dark’ or ‘too grim,’ Snyder was facing the same criticism in his adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel… while also being praised for capturing the book’s cynical tone so deftly.
Now a Watchmen TV series is coming from HBO, aimed to be the counter-programming to Marvel’s famous formula that Snyder’s film was a few years too early to enjoy. Yet even now, years after the movie earned full marks from Roger Ebert, the director of Marvel’s Doctor Strange calling Watchmen a “masterwork” makes headlines. Public praise of Snyder has become a “statement,” it seems, and no more than when it’s coming from his perceived competition.
But Snyder may have a major fan in a galaxy far, far away, as Star Wars icon Mark Hamill has playfully shown his affection for the movie online. At least… we think that’s what he’s up to. It’s not the first time that Zack Snyder’s films have been linked to Star Wars, showing his love for the series in countless jokes and social media posts. The affection seems to be returned, when Mark Hamill was asked via Twitter for “his favorite watch”:

Those who share the opinion that Snyder’s Watchmen is “unparalleled” were quick to take Hamill at his word, appreciating another prominent member of the geek community endorsing the film. An act strangely seen as flying in the face of a geek ‘consensus’ – despite the film earning accolades, adapting the source material to a shockingly faithful degree, and being “a joy” for the Watchmen cast. For all that positivity, Snyder’s work in the DCEU multiplied and amplified his detractors, retroactively making Watchmen a derided example of the grimdark style Snyder would make his trademark.
Hamill endorsing the movie as a “favorite watch” wouldn’t be the only rebellious quote from the actor in recent memory, either. After candidly admitting that The Last Jedi wasn’t “his Luke Skywalker” (an incomplete thought that he would later regret), and giving his own opinion that superhero movies need better stories. And hey, if the voice of the greatest animated Joker has the open mind to show respect to Jared Leto’s version in Suicide Squad, appreciating Watchmen isn’t much of a stretch.
Of course, there’s also the possibility that Hamill was a) making a play on the wording of the question, and/or b) referring to the graphic novel and not the movie (faithful though it may be). All evidence in the past suggests Hamill holds much less ill will towards Snyder than his loudest critics, regardless of his thoughts on Rorschach, Nite Owl, and the rest of the Minutemen.
So until Hamill clarifies otherwise, it’s safe to assume there’s one more geek icon arguing Watchmen isn’t remembered as fondly as it deserves. One more reason to watch it and see for yourselves…
