A Super Mario fan has created a concept in Unreal Engine 5 where Mario becomes terrifying and intimidating. Fan-made Super Mario games are common, and many of them are impressive and quite fun to play. From updating the graphics and gameplay of older games, to completely altering them or creating something brand new, Mario fans come up with concepts that Nintendo would never consider.

Super Mario has been one of Nintendo's most successful and popular franchises to date, with a plethora of different titles with different stories and features that make each unique. The original platformer Super Mario Bros. has expanded to games like Mario Kart, Super Mario Party, and Mario Sports Superstars. Each includes beloved Mario characters and familiar settings, but they all have their own special aspects. Now, Nintendo Switch Mario titles like Super Mario Odyssey are fulfilling for fans old and new due to their classic platforming gameplay with a modern twist.

Game developer Funkyzeit Games has designed a Super Mario concept that completely alters what fans know and love about the franchise, but creates a brand new and interesting feel that some have wanted in the Mario franchise for a long time. Funkyzeit Games' project, called Super Mario RTX, was made in Unreal Engine 5 and is extremely eye-catching, albeit very eerie. The Super Mario project depicts the typically lovable and charming hero Mario as a murderous monster with flame powers in a dark and ominous environment. Mario violently strikes down Goombas with fire and stomps on them despite their screams, and in the end faces Bowser with blood-soaked gloves and overalls.

Super Mario Unreal Engine 5 Concept Is Terrifying

The threatening and almost gory imagery along with the foreboding music playing makes Funkyzeit's concept edgy and scary - and wildly impressive. Other Super Mario fans in the comments seem amazed by their work, and wish that the game was playable for the public. Unfortunately Funkyzeit Games is unable to release the full game, but the concept video is incredible by itself. Even if the content isn't quite in line with Mario's mainstream games, this video still shows the potential of creating a Mario title with advanced technology.

Super Mario titles being reimagined as horror games seems to be quite common. Another fan of the franchise has recently created a first-person horror version of Super Mario 64 and many responded positively to that concept as well. Nintendo may not ever branch out Super Mario to the horror genre, but fans can wish, and other fans can create them.
