A Mario Kart 8 Deluxe player posted a video showing how the use of their Bullet Bill backfires, sending them from first place to last place. The Mario Kart franchise goes back to 1992 when the first go-kart racing game was released for the SNES. It has remained popular over the years with the addition of new characters, courses, and items. In fact, after an enhanced version of Mario Kart 8 for the Nintendo Switch was released, Mario Kart 8 became the best-selling racing game in U.S. history.

Part of the allure of Mario Kart is the available items that are used for a player to either catch up in the race or hinder other players from advancing along the driving course. These items are spaced along the course in boxes for players to get as they drive through them. They include the cartoonish banana peel, the speed-boosting mushrooms, the lightning bolt that acts as a hazard for all other players, and even the most-hated blue shell. Some items that are meant to be used to enhance a player's speed may just hinder them.

A Mario Kart fan that goes by the name Ahju on Twitter posted a video of their gameplay showing how Bullet Bill caused them to finish the race in last place. Playing as Waluigi in the video, Ahju started in sixth place on the last lap of the race. Upon getting the Starman and three red mushroom boosts, Ahju climbs to first place just seconds from the finish line. The last item they have in their arsenal is Bullet Bill, an item that takes over driving and blasts the player through the course. Ahju uses the Bullet Bill but unfortunately hits a corner with their kart, causing the Bullet Bill to turn their kart around and blast off in the opposite direction. As Ahju flies off back to the starting line, all other players pass them, crossing the finish line. When they finally regain control of their go-kart, they cross the finish line in last place.

This unfortunate turn of events is most likely due to a frustrating snag in Mario Kart's mechanics. Bullet Bill takes control over the player's go-kart when the player uses the item. This works well as a speed booster in normal circumstances. However, Bullet Bill is programmed to follow the road. Ahju was driving off the road and cutting corners, so when they activated Bullet Bill off the road, the game forced it to turn around and go back onto the road. The time it took for Bullet Bill to do this and go through the finish line is what caused Ahju's unlucky break.

Though released in 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still being bought by Nintendo Switch users. Now, Mario Kart fans can look forward to playing the game on the new Nintendo Switch OLED, coming out this October. Hopefully, players will be able to come in first without any snags.
