Despite all the unique special moves and course gimmicks, putting is still an integral part of the game. After all, the more hits it takes to finish the course, the lower the score. This guide will provide some useful tips to help players putt like a pro and stay ahead of their friends.

Mario Golf Putting Tips

Choose the Right Putter

  • Golfers can choose between long, medium, and short putters by pressing the left directional button on their controller. Short putts have the weakest power but are best used when close to the hole. Long putts are the most powerful and useful when on the edge of the green, but because of their higher power, players may accidentally overshoot with it. Also, don’t be afraid of making a short putt with the right directional button when up close to the hole. It's weaker but more controlled.

Putt Harder When it Rains

  • Sometimes, the course will be drenched in a downpour. Putting the ball will cause it to roll across the green, wet conditions will impede its speed. This is one instance where the player will want to apply a little more force than usual with their putting, so overshoot the goal on the shot gauge meter a little bit.

Pay Attention to Elevation

  • Most putting greens have a slight incline which can mess with the ball’s trajectory and speed. The grid displayed on the screen will indicate what direction the elevation will push the ball in, with blue lines being slightly and red lines being more intensely. If the distance between the golfer and the hole goes downhill, the speed of the ball will increase as gravity pushes it down, meaning the player should apply less force to their putt. Likewise, if the ball needs to go uphill to reach the green, more force should be applied to compensate. Also be aware that a straight shot to the hole might not be straight when putting along an incline, as the force of gravity will cause the ball to roll down the hill. To counteract this, aim the ball in the opposite direction of the hill’s descent to go against the flow of gravity.
