Mario of Super Mario Bros fame looks good enough to eat in an incredible and edible piece of charcuterie fan art. For 35 years, Nintendo’s iconic plumber Mario and his friends from the Mushroom Kingdom have received hundreds of tributes in the forms of cosplays, video game crossovers, mosaics and more. Now, one Mario fan has expressed their love of the tunnel warping and goomba squashing hero through the rather unconventional medium of salami and gouda.

Last year, as part of the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., Nintendo rereleased three of its most iconic games in the series for the Nintendo Switch. The 3D All Stars collection, comprising of Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy, went on sale, rather controversially, with a limited time period of availability. The availability concluded at the end of March with a surge in sales, as the internet dubbed it the day that Mario died. Along with Super Mario 3D All Stars, Nintendo also released Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury earlier this year. The former was a Switch remaster of the Wii U title which, due to poor console sales, never really got off the ground on its original debut. However, it found a new life on the Switch, with its UK release alone surpassing its Wii-U sales by three times.

Now, one recent Super Mario 3D World purchaser has honored the franchise in a unique and incredibly skillful way - with a delectable spread in the shape of Mario’s head. By using cold meats, breads, fruits, and dairy goods, KCkc3 created the uncanny rendition of Mario to celebrate their completion of Super Mario 3D World. Red peppers adorn Mario’s immediately recognizable hat, while carefully sliced cheese wedges make up his peachy pallor. This food board version of Mario even has a chocolate moustache, perfect for a sweet treat to finish off any meal.

Another of Nintendo’s most famous franchises, The Legend of Zelda, has also turned 35 recently. There was plenty of speculation that, like it did with its Super Mario franchise, Nintendo would release a special anniversary compilation of games centered around its Hylian hero. However, in a rather surprising move, Nintendo instead announced that Skyward Sword will be remastered for the Switch. At the same time as this announcement was made, Nintendo also assured fans that more news on its sequel to Breath of the Wild will be coming later this year, although it had nothing new to report at that time.

Nintendo has slightly missed the mark with its franchise’s anniversaries over the last 12 months, with many being underwhelmed with its offerings for both Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda thus far. Thankfully, fans like KCkc3 have picked up the slack and given the internet the eclectic and impressive homages that Mario and company rightfully deserve. Nintendo does still have time to make amends, at least where Link and Princess Zelda are concerned. That said, if KCkc3 did decide to also create a Temple of Time out of sprinkles, icing, and sponge in the future, it surely would not go amiss.
