Margot Robbie may next play Harley Quinn in DC's Birds of Prey movie. Robbie was the clear breakout star of Suicide Squad thanks to her performance as the character, and fans have since been waiting to find out when Robbie will play the former Dr. Quinzel again. However, with the world of DC Films going through some major changes in the aftermath of last year's Justice League disappointment, it's not been clear exactly where or when Robbie as Harley Quinn will show up next.
Among the developing DC Films projects that feature Harley Quinn in some capacity right now are Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, and Harley Quinn vs The Joker. It's been some time since there was a significant progress update on Birds of Prey, suggesting that the film might have fallen off the track sometime over the past year. However, a new report on the matter reveals that Birds of Prey is very much alive after all.
The Wrap reports that Suicide Squad 2, Harley Quinn vs The Joker, and surprisingly Birds of Prey are the three mostly likely candidates for Robbie's next onscreen appearance as Harley Quinn. According to The Wrap's sources, Birds of Prey in particular is a project that Robbie has taken a personal interest in. The reports also emphasizes that Birds of Prey will not be a Harley solo movie, but instead feature multiple female villains and superheroes/antiheroes alike.
While this isn't the first report to indicate that Warner Bros. and Robbie are giving serious thought to Birds of Prey, it is the first update in quite awhile. Over a year ago, it was reported that Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson was set to write the script for the female team-up. However, there hasn't been any news on the project since then. Now that Birds of Prey is being touted as potentially Robbie's next DC adaptation, this suggests that the project never fully stopped moving forward.
Still, there is a lot that needs to happen for Birds of Prey to take precedence in Robbie's DC schedule. Suicide Squad 2 has Gavin O'Connor writing and directing, and is set to begin filming this fall. It stands to reason that Harley will appear in that movie, despite having escaped from Belle Reve prison at the end of the first Suicide Squad. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad director David Ayer said that Gotham City Sirens is still "in development" just last month, and Harley Quinn vs The Joker found its directors last year.
If Birds of Prey does wind up being Robbie's next DC movie, it will need to pick up speed quickly. If not, it could be a sign that she isn't in Suicide Squad 2, which would come as a surprise. It is also worth noting that The Wrap has no mention of Gotham City Sirens, so who knows what the future holds for that project, regardless of Ayer's assurances. (Maybe Birds of Prey and Gotham City Sirens are being joined together for a huge dual.) Either way, Birds of Prey would help to further expand the shared DC cinematic universe, so maybe that is how new DC Films president Walter Hamada wants to utilize the Harley Quinn character in the immediate future.
Birds of Prey is in development but does not have a release date.
