The Many Saints of Newark, Warner Bros., and HBO’s upcoming prequel to The Sopranos has been revealed in a new trailer. It’s been almost 15 years since the acclaimed mafia series ended its prestigious run on HBO, which many point to as the starting point of the 21st century’s new “Golden Age of Television.” The Many Saints of Newark is written and produced by original series creator David Chase and is set to release in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1.
Set in the 1960s and 1970s, The Many Saints of Newark will show how Tony Soprano went from an ordinary boy from New Jersey to the criminal legend seen in The Sopranos. The young Tony will be played by Michael Gandolfini, the son of original star James Gandolfini. The Many Saints of Newark will also feature a sizable ensemble of supporting stars, including Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Ray Liotta, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Vera Farmiga, Michela De Rossi, and John Magaro.

As seen in the trailer, The Many Saints of Newark will deal heavily with the civil unrest in Newark in 1967, which was sparked by racially biased policing and economic oppression leveraged against the city’s majority Black population. Many of the new characters will enter the movie through that story of racial discord. The film will also feature young versions of numerous Sopranos characters beyond Tony, such as Tony’s father, Johnny (Bernthal), his mother Livia (Farmiga), and Paulie Walnuts (Magnussen).
Returning to a story as beloved and acclaimed as The Sopranos is no small task, but the trailer for The Many Saints of Newark shows the film is headed in the right direction. Getting Gandolfini to play the role his father brought to life so perfectly is a fantastic casting decision, and Chase returning to write another story in the vivid mob world he created is equally as exciting for longtime fans. With luck, the new movie can recapture some of the magic that made The Sopranos such a sensation on HBO. The Many Saints of Newark releases on October 1.
