A new trailer for The Many Saints of Newark reveals Ray Liotta's character, Tony's first meeting with Christopher Moltisanti, and more secrets of the Sopranos prequel movie. Set across the late 1960s and early 1970s and scheduled to release on October 1, 2021, the upcoming film tells the story of how Tony Soprano first got involved in his dangerous life of crime. The Many Saints of Newark stars an ensemble cast including Michael Gandolfini, Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Billy Magnussen, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Michela De Rossi, and Alexandra Intrator.

While many people who worked on The Sopranos have said that a sequel was impossible due to the series’ famously ambiguous ending, there are still many stories to tell before the start of the original narrative. That potential has built up plenty of excitement around The Many Saints of Newark, especially regarding Tony’s turn from an ordinary kid to a hardened criminal. The first trailer teased lots of big reveals for the backstory of The Sopranos, building anticipation for events to come.

The film’s second trailer reveals even more about Tony, Dickie, and the rest of the extended family. Dickie (Nivola) is shown talking with an imprisoned Aldo “Hollywood Dick” Montisanti (Liotta) about his desire to do some good in the world. That conversation is intercut with a montage of violent acts committed by Dickie, throwing the paradox of his life into sharp view. There’s also a glimpse at the beginning of Tony’s relationship with Christopher that alludes to all that follows in The Sopranos.

Because of all that happens over the course of The Sopranos, The Many Saints of Newark has lots of interesting opportunities for foreshadowing, like in the scene where baby Christopher cries after being introduced to Tony. It also seems like the film is drawing some parallels to Tony’s Sopranos arc with Dickie’s story, showing how the cycle of crime and violence repeats through generations. Like the show, the movie seems to be pretty thematically complex, which should please longtime fans.

The new trailer also shows how beautifully the Sopranos prequel is bringing its 1960s world to life. The Sopranos always had a great look to it, but it’s extra fun to see the franchise get a big film budget and embrace all the aesthetics of Tony’s youth. All the new details about the family’s past add fascinating depth to characters who were already widely beloved, making for an exciting story. The Many Saints of Newark releases on October 1, 2021.
