The Mandalorian is at the top of the Nielsen streaming rankings, making it the first-ever non-Netflix title to take the #1 spot. The Mandalorian first debuted on November 12, 2019, the launch day of Disney+ in the U.S. and Canada and was an almost instant hit. Baby Yoda, aka Grogu, was a worldwide phenomenon. As a result, The Mandalorian revitalized the Star Wars franchise after the polarizing The Rise of Skywalker and has spawned numerous spinoffs currently in development for Disney+.

It was the type of cornerstone title Disney+ was hoping to have when it first launched, enticing more and more subscribers to join the nascent streaming service. While The Mandalorian was a huge success relative to Disney+, which had only just launched, it also was behind Netflix's Stranger Things by 40% and hadn't cracked the Top 10 shows among all TV networks and digital services. Soon after The Mandalorian season 2 dropped in October of 2020, Disney+ subscribers had grown from 10 million at launch to a whopping 73 million in just one year. With The Mandalorian crossing over into the zeitgeist and Disney+ numbers growing at an astronomical rate, it was only a matter of time before it was able to catch up with Netflix.

THR revealed that for December 14-20, 2020, the week The Mandalorian's season 2 finale debuted, the Star Wars series was the top streaming show. It marks the first time since Nielsen began tracking streaming ranking that a non-Netflix title was at the top spot. In fact, The Mandalorian is the only non-Netflix title on the entire Top 10. Here is the full Nielsen Streaming Chart with total minutes viewed for that week:

1. The Mandalorian (Disney+), 1.34 billion

2. The Office (Netflix), 1.31 billion

3. The Crown (Netflix), 772 million

4. Grey's Anatomy (Netflix), 762 million

5. Manhunt: Deadly Games (Netflix), 712 million

6. Supernatural (Netflix), 684 million

7. Virgin River (Netflix), 681 million

8. Criminal Minds (Netflix), 651 million

9. Schitt's Creek (Netflix), 597 million

10. A California Christmas (Netflix), 581 million

Currently, Nielsen only ranks streaming titles from Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. One thing it also doesn't take into account is The Mandalorian was also the most pirated series of 2020. Though none of those service publicly reveal the exact streaming numbers, Nielsen collects streaming data in the same way they gather TV rating information. The company has over 64,000 homes with over 100,000 logging which programs they are watching, though only titles watched on TV screens are counted, nothing on mobile devices.

The news is a testament not just to how popular Star Wars and The Mandalorian are, but also to how quickly Disney+ is gaining on Netflix. After over just one year, Disney+ has already reached its subscriber target for Year Four. That's impressive growth, but the streamer is still way behind Netflix (173 million total subscribers). A big question, however, is whether Disney+ can retain those subscribers now that The Mandalorian season 2 has wrapped and especially considering The Mandalorian season 3 won't even begin filming until spinoff The Book of Boba Fett has wrapped.
