Now that The Mandalorian is over, people are canceling Disney+. The hit spin-off is the first live-action Star Wars series to arrive on television, and it’s hard to imagine things having gone much better for Disney. Of course, a great percentage of The Mandalorian’s success can likely be attributed to several main factors. For starters, the series was created and written by blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau, who did his part to ensure that the engaging cinematic qualities synonymous with Star Wars are alive and well in The Mandalorian.

The series also found instant acclaim with its characters–particularly the mysterious Baby Yoda, who is officially known as The Child. The character’s presence has caused quite the stir among fans, leading to endless debate and memes online. The Mandalorian’s timeline–which takes place 5 years after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, places it at point in the Star Wars canon that still appeals to a large percentage of the decades old franchise’s fan base. The program’s success has been a major contributor to the growing strength of Disney+, but now that The Mandalorian has completed its first season, Disney could be dealing with an unexpected problem.

ComicBook has reported that while Disney+ subscribers have clearly been thankful for the existence of The Mandalorian, now that the series has finished (for the time being, at least), there is a sizeable portion of those who are set to cancel their subscriptions. Whether the numerous tweets are solid proof that people will actually go through with dropping Disney+ remains to be seen, but as things currently stand, it does appear that a growing number of people don’t see much else on the service that makes it worth keeping. Below you can see a selection of some of the recent tweets about The Mandalorian and Disney+:

It’s been known for some time now that Favreau has been hard at work on the next season of The Mandalorian, and recently, it was officially announced the series would return as of autumn 2020. For those who plan on canceling Disney+ now, that will mean renewing their subscriptions in the fall. It’s a slightly laborious process, but it’s a far more cost effective measure for those Star Wars fans forced to subscribe as a result of Disney’s strict stance on exclusive content. From the beginning, Disney has been up front about their desire to keep their subscription streaming service family-friendly. While subscribers don’t seem to have too big of a problem with this, for many, The Mandalorian is one of the service’s few original series that offers something truly engaging for people of all ages.

As the streaming wars continue to heat up, Disney’s arrival on the scene initially seemed like a definite threat to Netflix. It’s far too early to comment as to whether this is the case, of course, but the fact that some subscribers are dropping out due to The Mandalorian and returning at a later date indicates that Disney’s content is not strong enough to keep some dishing out that monthly fee. Disney+ isn’t even three months old yet, and there is still plenty set to arrive in the coming months, but, for now at least, it’s not enough to prove to some subscribers that staying with Disney is the way.
