Carl Weathers says The Mandalorian season 3 starts filming in the next month and confirms he will be directing again. The first live-action Star Wars TV show has proven to be a massive success since it premiered on Disney+ in 2019, winning over critics and audiences alike. Though Lucasfilm has a plethora of other Star Wars series on the way, The Mandalorian continues to be a major part of their future plans. The Mandalorian season 3 was in development as early as last spring, several months before season 2 debuted.

While viewers have known The Mandalorian season 3 is in the pipeline, there have been questions regarding its production timeline. With spinoff The Book of Boba Fett (which premieres on Disney+ this December) taking precedence over the past year, The Mandalorian season 3 has been waiting its turn. Based on comments from series star Giancarlo Esposito, it sounded like The Mandalorian season 3 would start filming soon. Now, Weathers has narrowed it down to a specific window.

During his appearance at Steel City Con (via Fandom Spotlite), Weathers discussed the upcoming Mandalorian season 3. He confirmed that he will be reprising his character Greef Karga and would be directing at least one episode again. Weathers also mentioned the new season starts rolling "within the next month." Check out his comments below:

“And so now, we’re gonna start a new season of The Mandalorian, within the next month. Yeah. And I get to be in front of camera again, and I get to direct again.”

Disney seemingly confirmed The Mandalorian season 3 won't premiere until 2022 at last week's earnings call, and this latest update puts the season on track to air next year. For comparison, The Mandalorian season 2 began filming in October 2019 and debuted in October 2020. Barring any setbacks or delays, The Mandalorian season 3 could be ready to go in fall 2022, but it remains to be seen when exactly it will arrive on Disney+. The streaming service now has an ever-growing library of new Marvel and Star Wars content, so Disney will have to find the best window for The Mandalorian. It's no longer the only high-profile new show on Disney+.

What's interesting about this Mandalorian season 3 timeline is star Pedro Pascal is currently filming The Last of Us for HBO. At first glance, it would seem impossible for a show to begin production if its main actor is busy with another project, but The Mandalorian is an exception to this rule. Given the nature of Din Djarin (who frequently wears a helmet), Lucasfilm doesn't always need Pascal on-set at all times. In fact, he didn't physically play Din during the season 1 episode "Sanctuary" because he was in King Lear rehearsals. Stunt doubles will likely be used as necessary. Viewers can take solace in knowing this is something Lucasfilm accounted for. If they didn't have a plan in place, they wouldn't move forward with The Mandalorian season 3 right now.
