The Mandalorian season 3 will feature a long-awaited return to Coruscant, something that is vital to the overall Star Wars landscape. Coruscant is one of Star Wars' Core Worlds and has served as the capital of the galaxy since the early days of the Galactic Republic. This meant that Coruscant was one of the primary planets in George Lucas' prequel trilogy, as the planet also houses the Jedi Temple, something highly featured during both the High Republic and the Clone Wars eras.

With The Mandalorian season 3, Coruscant is seeing a Star Wars return that has been showcased of late. After appearing multiple times in Andor season 1 through the Imperial Security Bureau, Disney is opting to include Coruscant in another of its Star Wars stories. Not only does this fix a Star Wars Coruscant mistake, but it hints at big implications for The Mandalorian's story and what is known to come after in the Star Wars timeline.

Coruscant in The Mandalorian Season 3

The Mandalorian has the chance to fix a Coruscant issue by addressing the planet's lack of post-prequel relevance. Coruscant did not feature in the original or sequel trilogy besides one scene in George Lucas' special edition of Return of the Jedi. This means that The Mandalorian will offer the first look at Coruscant after the fall of the Empire. The planet was largely showcased during the era of the Republic, with Star Wars canon failing to showcase much of the planet after that. The Mandalorian will fix this mistake and show how the planet fared after being freed from being the Empire's capital.

How Coruscant Could Be Connected To Moff Gideon & The Empire

Moff Gideon Coruscant Mandalorian S3

In terms of The Mandalorian's story specifically, Coruscant could be vital. Firstly, much of The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 have surrounded The Mandalorian and Grogu's run-ins with the remnants of the Galactic Empire. As the Empire's main seat of power was Coruscant, the planet could still be home to secret factions of the Empire underneath the New Republic's nose. Despite this, Coruscant was part of the New Republic under a political coalition known as the Centrists. The Centrists still believed that elements of the Empire worked, despite condemning Palpatine.

This could link to Moff Gideon, who could be held captive on Coruscant. In The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, Din Djarin mentions that Gideon could be executed for his crimes by the New Republic Tribunal. As the New Republic implemented a circulatory capital system, meaning the capital of the New Republic was rotated among the Core Worlds for fairness, it could also mean that Star Wars' other New Republic governing bodies did the same. The Tribunal could be on Coruscant and could be where Gideon is being sentenced for his crimes which would explain Doctor Pershing being on Coruscant in the trailer as he worked with Gideon before.

The Mandalorian's Coruscant Story Can Set Up The Sequels

The Mandalorian and Star Wars Planet Coruscant

Another huge way Coruscant could play a part in The Mandalorian season 3 is by setting up the story of the sequel trilogy. As is known from the sequels, the First Order eventually rises as a successor to the Empire to resist the government of the New Republic. This could begin being explored through Coruscant in The Mandalorian season 3 through the aforementioned Centrists. The Centrists were part of the New Republic, only with ideologies primarily based on the Empire's dictatorship. This caused them to clash with the Populists, who believed that individual planets should retain their own sovereignty, such as Star Wars' Princess Leia Organa.

Due to this political gridlock, the Centrists eventually seceded from the New Republic to form the political branch of what became the First Order. Coruscant was a highly Centrist planet, which means that The Mandalorian season 3 could begin exploring the type of politics and people who were partly responsible for the rise of the First Order. In doing so, The Mandalorian would further fix some mistakes of the sequel trilogy in that the core politics of the sequel films are being explored; something left out of the trilogy.

This would only further the setup of the sequels that are already theorized to be part of The Mandalorian. If it is revealed that the Empire remnants do want Grogu to begin the Palpatine clones used in the sequel trilogy, then The Mandalorian's Coruscant inclusion is only bolstered by this. The trailer showcased Doctor Pershing, a cloning doctor from The Mandalorian, on Coruscant. This provides further hints that The Mandalorian season 3 is further setting up the politics and story beats of Disney's sequel trilogy.
