Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the villainous Moff Gideon on The Mandalorian, has suggested that Grogu could eventually “save our universe." Esposito, who boasts multiple appearances in Spike Lee films throughout the 80s and 90s, became a fan-favorite screen villain off the back of his turn as drug-kingpin Gus Fring in Breaking Bad. Since then not only has Esposito returned to the role in the prequel series Better Call Saul, but he has also has brought many other villains to the screen, including lending his voice to Lex Luthor in the animated Harley Quinn series.

In 2019, Espositio wowed Star Wars fans when he made his debut in the penultimate episode of The Mandalorian season 1 as Moff Gideon, a leader of the scattered Imperial remnant. In the final minutes of the season 1 finale, Gideon cut his way out of his crashed TIE Fighter with the infamous Darksaber, a one-of-a-kind weapon and an important symbol of leadership for the Mandalorian people. While Gideon was eventually captured by Din Djarin at the end of season 2, his character’s knowledge of the Empire’s nefarious plans will undoubtedly play a major role in the upcoming third season.

Most recently Esposito made an appearance at GalaxyCon Raleigh and encountered a young fan with a few questions about his work on the show. In the video of the encounter, posted by WRAL, Esposito remains tight-lipped about any potential season 3 story details but did have some things to say about Grogu’s role in the show moving forward after being handed a toy version of the character. Check out what he said below:

I love this Baby Yoda. I am going to get this child, and it’s for a very different reason than many people think. This child has magic powers, is 50 years old and can see the future. And we want everyone to know, that eventually on this show, this child could save our universe.

Moff Gideon and Grogu in The Mandalorian

While Esposito’s words could be little more than idle speculation, they do raise interesting questions as to Grogu’s continued presence in both The Mandalorian season 3 and the broader Star Wars canon as a whole. With the season 2 finale seeing Grogu entrusted into the care of Luke Skywalker, many fans have been left wondering whether season 3 would feature Grogu at all, or would it instead move to focus purely on Din Djarin’s story without his young companion. Another important question is, that if Grogu does indeed join Luke’s Jedi academy, does that also mean he is ultimately fated to fall victim to Ben Solo’s eventual turn to the dark side and is destined to be slaughtered alongside his fellow Padawan learners?

However Jon Favreau plans to move forward with it, given the excitement that Grogu has inspired in the fandom so far, it seems unlikely that he will be kept away from screens too long. More importantly, given the previous hints that the experiments he was being subjected to are somehow linked with the First Order’s Supreme Leader Snoke and Emperor Palpatine’s resurrection, it seems likely that he will play a significant role as the show attempts to connect the dots between the original and sequel trilogies. With The Mandalorian season 3 reported to have already begun filming, fans are eagerly awaiting to see what the future may have in store for the curious young Jedi.
