Here are all the major details from The Mandalorian season 2's new trailer. Debuting in late 2019, Star Wars fans didn't know quite what to expect from the franchise's first live-action TV series, especially one launching as part of the Disney+ streaming service. Despite the trepidation, The Mandalorian's first season was rapturously received, praised for its characterization, streamlined story, visuals and style. And, of course, a certain Baby Yoda made a huge splash in the mainstream, becoming arguably the defining character of 2019. Needless to say, a second season was swiftly green-lit, and fans have been eagerly anticipating Mando's return ever since.
The Mandalorian season 2 promises a host of new (but familiar) characters, many making their first appearance in live-action form. Rosario Dawson will play Ahsoka Tano, Katee Sackhoff is Bo-Katan Kryze, and Timothy Olyphant portrays Cobb Vanth. Temuera Morrison will be returning to the Star Wars galaxy as Boba Fett, and Michael Biehn is lined up for a mystery bounty hunting role. Despite the influx of exciting fresh faces, The Mandalorian's focus remains firmly on Din Djarin and Baby Yoda, and the direction their latest adventures will take.
After a long wait, the first trailer for The Mandalorian's second season has finally arrived, offering a glimpse at what Jon Favreau has is store following the runaway critical and commercial success of season 1. The trailer also offers plenty of hints towards original locations, new storylines and previously-unseen characters. These are the biggest takeaways from The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer.
14. The Razor Crest Is In Bad Shape
The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer begins in typically unique and self-aware style - the classic Star Wars "approaching spaceship" shot, but with Mando's Razor Crest looking distinctly beaten up, limping forward pathetically. The visual is a great metaphor for the David vs. Goliath battle that Din Djarin faces in his mission to protect Baby Yoda, but there's no clue on exactly how the Razor Crest becomes so badly damaged. The ship is seen purring along nicely in other trailer scenes, and wasn't damaged in season 1's finale on Nevarro. This introductory shot suggests a big space battle that Mando and Baby Yoda just barely manage to fly away from. Somewhat ominously, a later trailer scene depicts a flaming object careering towards the surface of a planet. Is it an asteroid... or a crashing Razor Crest?
13. The Armorer's Mission
Emily Swallow's Armorer was a recurring figure in The Mandalorian season 1, and while her familiar masked visage isn't glimpsed in season 2's trailer, her instantly recognizable voice can be heard. Repeating her exchange with Din Djarin from season 1, The Armorer instructs her fellow Mandalorian to head out in search of the Jedi ("enemy sorcerers") so that Baby Yoda can be with his own people. The repetition of this quote reinforces the overarching mission for The Mandalorian's protagonist pairing in season 2 - get Baby Yoda safely back home, wherever that may be. Interestingly, Mando's only lead in this quest appears to be the ancient "Jedi" The Armorer spoke of, potentially leading him to Ahsoka Tano or other Force users.
12. Searching For The Jedi
Din Djarin embarking on a hunt for the Jedi is an intriguing premise for The Mandalorian season 2. Thanks to the efforts to Palpatine and the Sith, Jedi are few and far between at this point in the Star Wars timeline. Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa are somewhere out there, with the former looking to start his own, ill-fated class of Jedi Knights, and Ahsoka Tano is also still alive. With the fate of Ezra Bridger a mystery, Mando doesn't have many Jedi to look for, so any hopes of leaving Baby Yoda with the religious Force-sensitives will be quickly dashed. Although she doesn't appear in the trailer, Ahsoka will most likely be the one to inform Din and Baby Yoda that their quest for the Jedi is in vain.
11. The Mandalorian Goes Back To Tatooine
The Mandalorian's return to Tatooine in season 2 has been common knowledge for some time, arguably ever since those familiar spurs were heard approaching Fennec Shand in season 1. Official images had confirmed Tusken Raiders and Banthas would feature, and both are highlighted in The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer. A ship that seems to be the Razor Crest approaches Tatooine, with a mounted Tusken Raider watching on from atop a cliff. It's not currently known why Din Djarin would return to the famous Star Wars desert planet, but his presence will likely resolve season 1's Boba Fett cliffhanger and introduce the vigilante known as Cobb Vanth. Expect someone in Boba Fett armor when The Mandalorian returns to Tatooine in season 2.
10. A Trip To Illum?
Some of the most prominent scenes in The Mandalorian season 2's trailer take place on an unidentified ice planet. There are plenty of chilly locales in Star Wars mythology, from Hoth to Maldo Kreis, the latter of which Din Djarin visited previously in the series premiere. After The Mandalorian's first season explored Tatooine (from 1979's Star Wars), it would be fitting for season 2 to visit Hoth, a planet made famous by The Empire Strikes Back, but the ice planet in the new Mandalorian trailer has more in common with Illum, the home of the First Order's Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens. Illum was also the site where Jedi obtained Kyber crystals for their lightsabers, so if Mando is looking for Force-users, Illum is a sensible destination. Unfortunately, the First Order had already set up shop here during the timeline of The Mandalorian. Whichever icy planet The Mandalorian will be visiting, it looks like the Razor Crest takes a rough landing.
9. WWE's Sasha Banks Makes Her Star Wars Debut
As Din Djarin and Baby Yoda stroll into a busy port town, they're pursued by a mysterious character in a dark cloak. Although the identity of this figure remains unknown, the actress is WWE wrestler Sasha Banks. The casting of Banks was reported earlier this year when the WWE star began Tweet-sparring with Cara Dune actress and former UFC fighter, Gina Carano, but Banks' character is still very much an enigma. The timing of Banks' appearance in The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer coincides with The Armorer's lesson on Jedi history, suggesting she could be aligned with the Jedi themselves, but others are speculating that Sasha is playing Sabine Wren instead. Whoever the wrestler will be portraying, Banks is another exciting addition to The Mandalorian.
8. Mando & Baby Yoda Travel By Sea
In a world littered with speeders and spaceships, Star Wars fans don't usually see characters travelling by boat, yet that's exactly what Din Djarin and Baby Yoda find themselves doing in The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer. The journey likely comes immediately before or after the duo's arrival in an aforementioned port town, although it's too early to say where they might be headed. It's certainly a novelty to see proper sea-faring in the galaxy far, far away, and this might reveal the measures Mando is taking to remain off-grid. Alternatively, Din Djarin and Baby Yoda could be forced to sail on water due to the beaten-up Razor Crest seen at the beginning of the trailer.
7. Mandalorian's X-Wing Allies
The New Republic had only a limited presence in The Mandalorian's first season. While helping to spring a prisoner from captivity, Mando was betrayed by his accomplices and left at the New Republic's mercy, but the bounty hunter had his revenge by luring a team of X-Wings directly to the gang's base. In The Mandalorian's second season, the New Republic and Din Djarin have apparently come to somewhat of an understanding, as one trailer scene reveals the Razor Crest flanked by a pair of X-Wings. Djarin doesn't seem duly concerned by their presence, which would suggest the two sides are working together. It's possible that in his desperation to evade the Empire, Djarin calls upon the authorities.
6. Cara Dune & Greef Karga Are Back In The Mandalorian Season 2
The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer didn't contain much in the way of familiarity, with no sign of Moff Gideon, Fennec Shand, or any of the other Mandalorians. However, one brief shot did highlight the returns of Gina Carano's Cara Dune and Carl Weathers' Greef Karga, both of whom had already been confirmed to reprise their roles. Based purely on footage shown in the trailer, Din Djarin seemingly reunites with Dune and Karga back on Nevarro, where Karga is presumably in charge once again following Gideon's defeat. Interestingly, Dune looks to have remained on the planet following season 1's finale. Perhaps adventuring with Mando and being choked by Baby Yoda inspired a sense of purpose in the former Rebel.
5. The Empire (Or First Order) Stormtroopers In Full Force
Rumors of the Empire's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Although the Battle of Endor was commonly considered the moment the Empire fell, the Star Wars sequels proved otherwise, replacing the iconic Return of the Jedi clash with the Battle of Jakku. In The Mandalorian's first season, Moff Gideon led a small band of remnant forces, but the Empire look back and better than ever in season 2. A handful of TIE fighters are shown, as well as Stormtroopers on speeder bikes pursuing Mando over a rocky cliff face. But perhaps the most interesting moment shot is of Stormtroopers running through a hallway. Does this scene take place on Starkiller Base? Or in the Star Destroyer Giancarlo Esposito recently hinted at? Could it even be possible that these villains are no longer the dying embers of the Empire, but the emerging spark of the First Order?
4. Mando Is Trapped
The shot is a fleeting one, but interesting nonetheless. Din Djarin appears to be trapped underwater, drowning, with a cage above his head. The context of the scene isn't clear, but the similar imagery could connect Din Djarin's predicament to the boat trip shown earlier in the trailer. If Mando is trapped, though, it's only natural to worry about Baby Yoda's whereabouts at this time. Has the youngster been captured, with his protector left to drown?
3. Mando Using His Jetpack In Season 2
Din Djarin gained his Mandalorian jetpack in the finale of season 1, and the new trailer suggests he'll be getting plenty of use out of it in season 2. The bounty hunter can be seen blasting off a cliff during the previously mentioned Stormtrooper chase, and there's no denying how cool The Mandalorian's hero looks flying through the air, flames rocketing behind him.
2. Mando's Streetlight Torture
One of the hardest scenes to decipher in The Mandalorian's season 2 trailer is when Mando fires at a mystery figure strung up on a streetlight. One of the many new locations introduced by the trailer is an urban, graffiti-covered world - most likely where Din and Baby Yoda attend the boxing match mentioned above. Mando appears to have a man (potentially the one-eyed Gore Keresh) tied up, shooting at the lamp to rain down sparks. Maybe the bounty hunter is trying to find out who tipped the boxing match crowd off to Baby Yoda's high value.
1. Din Djarin & Baby Yoda Are Attacked (But Mando Wins)
In the standout scene of The Mandalorian season 2's trailer, Din Djarin and Baby Yoda are taking in some kind of futuristic boxing match between two Gamorreans, when fellow attendees start showing interest in the green youngster. Spoiling for a fight, the crowd descend on Mando, who reacts by opening his whistling bird missiles. Reading the room, Baby Yoda wisely closes his capsule and hunkers down until the kerfuffle is over. Moments like this prove why everyone fell in love with the character in the first place, but beyond the cuteness, the scene proves that nowhere is safe for this runaway duo.
