The Mandalorian season 2 premiere titled "The Marshal" featured Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda return to Tatooine, but the episode ended without resolving one of the biggest mysteries from season 1 — what happened to Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). In season 2, the titular character is still committed to his new mission to reunite the Child with his people. Instead of looking for the Jedi, however, he's hunting down other Mandalorians in the hope that they can guide him on his latest venture. His hunt led him once again to the classic Star Wars planet where he helped Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), the people of Mos Pelgo, and the Tusken Raiders defeat a Krayt Dragon.

With the beastly creature taken down and Mando retrieving Boba Fett's (Temuera Morrison) armor from Cobb Vanth, he and the Child bid Mos Pelgo, and potentially Tatooine, goodbye as they continue their journey. But, The Mandalorian season 2, episode 1 didn't address the lingering questions regarding the ultimate fate of Fennec Shand. Introduced in season 1, episode 5, titled "The Gunslinger," Fennec is an elite mercenary who's famous for killing all of the top syndicates, including the Hutts. In the outing, newbie bounty hunter Toro Calican (Jake Cannavale) asked Mando for help to hunt down Fennec. But, after learning that Din himself was a target, Toro opted to kill Fennec and go after Mando instead.

The initial assumption was that Fennec was dead, but that may not be the case. After Din successfully escaped Toro's advances, an unknown character was seen walking towards Fennec's lifeless body. Many assumed that this mystery was being saved for later episodes, but since The Mandalorian season 1 never returned to Tatooine after that, it was carried over to season 2. Unfortunately, it remains unresolved even after Din and Baby Yoda's recent trip back to the sand planet.

With the ultimate fate of Fennec still unknown, theories about who may have retrieved her body continue to be popular. Thanks to additional information revealed in The Mandalorian season 2 premiere, there are two choices as to who knows what happened to the mercenary. Firstly, it could be that Cobb Vanth discovered her body while patroling, which one would assume to be part of his responsibility as a Marshal. The second possibility could be that the mysterious figure was Boba Fett, who's confirmed to have survived his fall into the Sarlacc pit. This has been the initial theory since the same spur sound used for the character's introduction in The Empire Strikes Back can be heard as the mysterious character walked towards Fennec's body. Assuming that it's the second option, it means that The Mandalorian has long plotted the return of Boba Fett through the show — a good indication that Jon Favreau and the rest of his creative team know how they want to handle the character.

Depending on how The Mandalorian wants to progress its overall narrative for season 2, Din and Baby Yoda could find themselves back on Tatooine in order to further delve into Boba Fett's story. The revelation that he's alive at the end of the premiere episode is merely a tease, with the show likely having more in store for the character. And, if he really was the one who found Fennec, Boba Fett's future appearance can also provide answers as to what happened to her.
