Robert Rodriguez has shared a selfie from the set of The Mandalorian season 2, where he is seen hanging out with Baby Yoda. The beloved character made his debut in The Mandalorian season 1, where he quickly became an overnight sensation with fans, even spawning a litany of consumer merchandise, including a Hot Toys deluxe figure set. In fact, due to Disney+ users heavily binging the show during self-quarantine, Baby Yoda toy sales have spiked tremendously.

The Mandalorian follows a lethal bounty hunter operating in the outer reaches of the galaxy, detailing his perilous exploits out of the reach of the New Republic. One of his many odd jobs causes him to cross paths with "The Child", later to be coined Baby Yoda by fans. Instead of handing the creature to those who want to harm it, he decides to protect it at all costs, putting both of their lives in serious danger as a result. The beloved character will return in The Mandalorian season 2, where he will continue his treacherous travels with the bounty hunter.

Robert Rodriguez has posted a selfie of himself and Baby Yoda to his official Twitter page. The picture shows the pair sharing some quality time together off-camera during the production of The Mandalorian season 2. Along with the picture, the director added a cheeky comment saying, "I am truly humbled to say I have now had the very rare privilege of directing the biggest star in the universe." The Mandalorian season 1 left viewers with a wide array of lingering questions, including those pertaining to the origins of Baby Yoda and who is chasing after him. As for his origins, a theory is circulating that the debut of Rosario Dawson's Ashoka Tano will be able to help explain his background. In regards to who may truly be after him, there are multiple theories. One theory suggests that Emperor Palpatine is the one hunting Baby Yoda down, while another makes a case that someone else wants him dead, a third party linked to Taika Waititi's IG-11.

This behind the scenes photo not only reveals that the director and Baby Yoda have crossed paths, but it also confirms earlier reports that Rodriguez directed at least one installment of the new season. However, Rodriguez isn't the only notable director lending their talents to season 2. Series cast member Carl Weathers directed an episode and Ant-Man director Peyton Reed has also confirmed he helmed at least one too. The Mandalorian season 1 directors Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow and Rick Famuyiwa were also behind the camera for new installments.

Not only is this photo of Rodriguez and Baby Yoda an adorable delight, but it's also a fun reminder that the talented director will be involved in the new season of the series. Rodriguez, when paired with the right material, can showcase some serious talent behind the camera, utilizing visually dynamic camerawork to make straightforward stories feel fresh and exciting. The grounded approach to the series lends well to the director's sensibilities, making the prospect of him directing an episode or two extremely appealing. If anyone can make Baby Yoda shine brighter, it's Rodriguez, but fans will have to wait until The Mandalorian season 2 hits Disney+ this October to see his highly anticipated return.
