A recent report suggests Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones actor Temuera Morrison is joining The Mandalorian season 2 as Boba Fett, but it's possible he's also playing the former clone trooper, Captain Rex. The Disney+ series is set roughly five years after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a Mandalorian bounty hunter, as he protects the mysterious Child (aka Baby Yoda). This includes keeping The Child out of the hands of other bounty hunters, and it's been speculated that one of those bounty hunters on their trail is Boba Fett.

In Attack of the Clones, Morrison plays Jango Fett, the template from which all of the clone troopers are created. Boba Fett, it's revealed, is also a clone of Jango, though he's spared the accelerated aging and augmentations, and is raised as his son. With the report Morrison is joining The Mandalorian season 2, it's quickly been assumed it's as an older Boba Fett, given his age and the show's setting. Though Boba Fett is seemingly killed in Return of the Jedi, it's been teased before he may have actually survived. Even The Mandalorian season 1 hints Boba Fett could return, and assuming season 2 follows through with that tease, an appearance from Boba Fett would make sense — and Morrison's casting would seem to confirm it. But then, Boba Fett isn't the only character Morrison could be playing in The Mandalorian season 2.

While Temuera Morrison could be playing a still alive and older Boba Fett on The Mandalorian season 2, he could also be playing an equally still alive and older Captain Rex — the clone trooper who features regularly in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and is close friends with the former Jedi, Ahsoka Tano. Rosario Dawson is even reportedly joining The Mandalorian season 2 as a live-action Ahsoka, and if true, then an appearance from Rex seems all the more likely. And as Morrison is the actor who portrays the adult clones seen throughout the prequel movies, if Rex were to transition into live-action, Morrison is presumably the actor who would play the part.

Temuera Morrison as Jango Fett in Star Wars Attack of the Clones

It's known Rex fights in the Battle of Endor, meaning he's still alive during Return of the Jedi. With The Mandalorian taking place only a few years after, Rex could conceivably still be alive, even with a clone's accelerated aging. Though, given that Rex would be getting on in years, the 59-year-old Morrison would likely require age makeup or digital effects in order to accurately portray the clone at this stage in his life. Still, Rex is a role Morrison has expressed interest in playing before, and even Dave Filoni, writer/director for both The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, recently sparked some rumors Rex could appear in season 2.

Ahsoka, too, is alive at this point in the Star Wars timeline, and if Dawson is indeed playing her on The Mandalorian, then her involvement in season 2's narrative is most likely how Rex would appear. It remains unknown what Ahsoka would be doing on The Mandalorian, but there's a good chance it relates to The Child's Force abilities. In which case, Rex's role could also come in a flashback connecting to Ahsoka's past as a Jedi, possibly requiring Morrison to get a little of bit of de-aging effects in order to accurately portray a younger Rex.

Whether it's as a Rex in his twilight years or through a flashback, Morrison reprising his role as a clone and playing the live-action version of Rex for The Mandalorian season 2 remains a possibility. Such a role could certainly be in addition to also playing an older Boba Fett, but if The Mandalorian season 2 is including Ahsoka, then it'd be a real missed opportunity to not have Morrison appear alongside her as Rex.
