Disney+ will debut an hour-long "making of" documentary taking fans behind the scenes of The Mandalorian season 2 on Christmas Day. The live-action Star Wars show created by Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who executive produces alongside The Clone Wars' Dave Filoni and Star Wars head honcho Kathleen Kennedy, has been a breakout hit for Disney+. The popularity of the show is so immense its become an instant cultural icon and is a large reason for Disney's streaming service exceeding expectations by surpassing 86 million subscribers in its first year.

The Mandalorian season 2 is currently releasing weekly on Disney+ and has been a successful follow-up to season 1. Not only has it doubled down on the core characters, its brought back fan favorites, including Boba Fett (Temeura Morrison), Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) and Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who will get her own live-action show on Disney+. Season 2 has also made extensive use of the virtual production techniques introduced in season 1, which Disney is now rolling out across the world as a new way to quickly and safely shoot complex outdoor scenes in a controlled set environment. Now, fans will get more insight into the show over the holidays.

In this new installment of "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian," filmmakers and cast provide unprecedented access to the storytelling decisions and innovations that went into the second season of the Emmy Award-winning series. Featuring immersive on-set footage that places viewers right in the middle of the filmmaking process, and rare insights from the cast and crew, this special documentary explores the production of all 8 episodes in season two – from early concept art through the groundbreaking technology introduced in the series.

The Mandalorian Virtual Production Sets VFX

The episode follows the first series of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, which explored the creation of the show and took an in-depth look at season 1's production and post-production. That series ran for eight episodes, featuring run times from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. So, while this new episode is the longest yet, it might be disappointing for fans to know season 2's behind the scenes documentary will be condensed into one episode rather than many.

Still, audiences will likely eat this one up, appearing as it does just after The Mandalorian season 2 finale, due to drop on Disney+ Friday, December 18. The documentary is likely to be fascinating, as it will explore how Boba Fett was brought back to life for the series, and may also tease what's in store for the Ahsoka series that will be shooting in 2021.
