Mark Hamill thanks The Mandalorian creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni for orchestrating Luke Skywalker's triumphant return in the season 2 finale. Though the first season of The Mandalorian told a simple story within the greater Star Wars universe, season 2 upped the ante considerably by introducing a slew of major characters. Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) was surprisingly resurrected and scored his own spin-off series, while animated characters Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson, also getting her own show) put down live-action roots. Fans thought they had seen it all, but the season 2 finale left the biggest surprise for its last moments.

Much of The Mandalorian season 2 focused on Din Djarin's (Pedro Pascal) journey to finding a Jedi who could care for and train baby Grogu, and at one point, Grogu even used the Force to call out to someone in the galaxy. Exactly who he reached was kept a secret until the very end of the season, when Star Wars legend Luke Skywalker arrived in truly epic fashion to take the child. Luke's Mandalorian cameo was kept a closely guarded secret ahead of time, making for a twist that stunned and amazed fans. Making it even more special was the fact that Hamill had a hand in Luke's appearance.

Now, almost two weeks since the Mandalorian finale arrived, Hamill has shared a sweet message on social media thanking the people who made it happen. Hamill shared a picture of a hooded Luke from the episode and wrote, "Sometimes the greatest gifts are the most unexpected and something you never realized you wanted until it was given." He capped it off with the hashtag "#ThankYouJonAndDave," further highlighting his gratitude at being involved with the whole affair. Scroll on to see Hamill's post.

Though CGI gave Hamill the same youthful look he had at the end of Return of the Jedi, he was definitely on set while filming The Mandalorian's finale. Luke appearing at the end of the episode capped off a season that was already extremely well-received, proving to many that there are still reasons to get excited about Disney's new Star Wars efforts. The Luke on The Mandalorian meant something to fans who had been let down by his arc in the sequel trilogy, and it sounds like it meant a lot to Hamill too.

Now the big question on fans' minds is: Will Luke return to The Mandalorian in the future? Seeing as he's such a major character, it seems unlikely that he will play a large role in the series going forward. However, if Grogu manages to return to Din's side, perhaps there will be space for another Luke cameo. It might not be as much of a fun surprise as the first one, but it will still be exciting to see the iconic hero once again. Fans will just have to wait and see what the future holds.
