The Mandalorian Season 2 Is Already Being Written

The Mandalorian executive producer Jon Favreau reveals he's already hard at work writing scripts for the Disney+ series' second season.

Jon Favreau reveals he's already writing season 2 of The Mandalorian. This fall, the Star Wars franchise finally makes the leap to live-action TV, with The Mandalorian being one of the highly-anticipated exclusives on the Disney+ streaming service. Set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, the show follows the titular lone gunman through the galactic underworld, far from the New Republic's authority. Pedro Pascal leads a talented cast that also includes Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and others.

While there's obviously been much attention given to this December's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (which concludes the movies' Skywalker saga), Lucasfilm is making sure to drum up hype and anticipation for The Mandalorian. Back in April, footage was screened during a Celebration panel, providing a few story details, character reveals, and action teases. Many are excited to see what Favreau and company have in store, though fans are wondering if The Mandalorian will be a limited series or get a multi-season commitment. Based on the latest comments by Favreau, it would appear to be the latter.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote the upcoming Lion King remake, Favreau was of course asked about his Star Wars project. Providing an update, he essentially confirmed The Mandalorian season 2 is in the works:

“I got together with the guy, Dave Filoni, who is my partner on this one as producer, and we’re writing this stuff and coming up – it’s honestly like turning over your toy chest and playing with all the Star Wars toys together. We’re having a great time. It’s all new characters, it’s gonna be on Disney+ coming up in the Fall, and we’re done with the first season. I was actually writing part of the second season now. So I’m having a blast.”

Lucasfilm has yet to officially announce The Mandalorian season 2, instead green lighting other Star Wars Disney+ shows like the Cassian Andor Rogue One prequel. That said, it isn't surprising there's already some groundwork on The Mandalorian season 2 being done. The general premise certainly sounds like it's strong enough to carry multiple seasons, as the criminal underbelly in Star Wars was largely unexplored in the films. In the saga movies, there are only bits and pieces peppered throughout (Favreau mentions the cantina and The Empire Strikes Back's bounty hunters in his interview). It would be a shame if The Mandalorian had just a short time on air, barely scratching the surface of its potential. Unlike the Cassian series (which has a pre-determined endgame), the possibilities for The Mandalorian are endless.

Fans should get a better idea of what to expect next month, when The Mandalorian is showcased at the 2019 D23 Expo. Lucasfilm is skipping Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, meaning they have big plans in mind for D23. While there will almost certainly be new Mandalorian footage that screens at the Disney convention (whether it's released online or no remains to be seen), it'll be interesting to see if Lucasfilm talks about the show's future and gives season 2 a green light. If Favreau is already hard at work writing it, then odds are it will see the light of day at some point. Star Wars is going to take an extended break from movies after The Rise of Skywalker, so if The Mandalorian is a hit with fans, a second season could help fill the void.
