An Easter egg in The Mandalorian season 2 trailer seems to have teased Boba Fett's original look that was designed by Ralph McQuarrie. Despite hardly speaking - and appearing - in the original Star Wars trilogy, Boba Fett has always been a fan-favorite character. Much of that is owed to him wearing Mandalorian armor and being a renowned bounty hunter, someone who was trusted by Darth Vader and actually caught Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon. But despite his story continuing later on, he was promptly killed off in Return of the Jedi.
George Lucas probably didn't know at the time just how popular Boba Fett would become, but things drastically changed by Return of the Jedi's release. He was a cult character and one that resonated with fans long after the trilogy ended, partly because of his uniqueness. Of course, while Boba Fett's adventures as a bounty hunter have been chronicled in Legends and his time as a child being told in Clone Wars, he hasn't returned in canon since his "death" - but that will change with The Mandalorian season 2.
Temuera Morrison is supposed to appear as Boba Fett in the upcoming season, but it's unclear if he will don the same armor the character had in Return of the Jedi - or if he'll have something else. This may be the perfect opportunity to introduce McQuarrie's original design for Boba Fett - a design that was later tweaked and finalized by Joe Johnston - which has been teased in The Mandalorian season 2 trailer. Johnston once revealed in an interview for the book Giant Robot that Boba Fett's original all-white armor was designed for the Empire's "super troopers"; they were supposed to make up a battalion of a few hundred specialized Stormtroopers, but the idea was dropped and Lucas decided to turn Boba Fett into a bounty hunter, which is when Johnston repainted and redesigned his armor to appear worn out. With him coming back in The Mandalorian season 2, this is a good opportunity to introduce that original design in canon.
Of course, it's entirely possible the Easter egg is just that: an Easter egg for Star Wars fans. The Mandalorian has routinely been dropping such references in each episode, making the galaxy feel more organic in doing so. Some fans have suggested online that the Easter egg is for a First Order Snowtrooper, but that's unlikely given that they wouldn't have a prominent presence yet. After all, Imperial remnants are still around, evidenced by the Stormtroopers in the trailer and Moff Gideon in season 1.
