The Mandalorian season 2 can provide answers about how Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) got a hold of Anakin and Luke Skywalker's lightsaber. With the Skywalker saga finished after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm officially wrapped up the space opera's main saga. That said, due to an incoherent sequel trilogy stemming from poor planning, not all loose narrative threads were given proper resolution including its biggest one - how did Maz get Anakin (Hayden Christensen) and Luke's blue lightsaber.

Fans last saw the weapon at the end of The Empire Strikes Back after Luke (Mark Hamill) lost it in Cloud City, until it re-emerged in Star Wars: The Force Awakens stashed in Maz's castle on Takodana. For some reason, the lightsaber called onto Rey (Daisy Ridley) and since then, she became the wielder of the mythical sword until she got her yellow-bladed weapon. Due to the progression of events, however, Maz never got the chance to explain how exactly she had the lightsaber, leaving fans wondering about this big mystery.

With the Skywalker saga now done, the assumption is that the question of how Maz got the Skywalker lightsaber will remain unanswered for the foreseeable future. However, that may not be the case, as Lucasfilm might start to get to the bottom of the mystery through other avenues, including The Mandalorian season 2 (h/t Inverse).

Ahsoka Is Rumored To Have A Blue Lightsaber In The Mandalorian Season 2

Ahsoka and The Mandalorian

After her triumphant return on the small screen in the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano will be making her live-action debut in The Mandalorian season 2. Played by Rosario Dawson, this would be the former Jedi's next outing in chronological Star Wars order following her appearance at the end of Star Wars Rebels, which takes place on the heels of the Galactic Empire's fall in Return of the Jedi. Plot specifics of how she fits into Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda's future adventures are still scarce at the moment; however, rumor has it that she'll be wielding a blue lightsaber when she appears in the show. This begs the question, where did she get this blue-bladed saber? One theory (via Reddit) suggests that this could be the Skywalker lightsaber.

It's worth noting that this is nothing but a pieced-together hypothesis based on a rumor, so it's best to take it with a healthy dose of salt. Nevertheless, it's an interesting idea should Lucasfilm decide to take it this route, especially since it doesn't go against any established event in the current canon. On top of that, it's also a cool way to get Ahsoka more involved in the Skywalker family history considering her complex bond with Anakin.

How Ahsoka Could Find Anakin & Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber

Darth Vader with Ahsoka lightsaber The Clone Wars season 7 finale

Assuming that Ahsoka does have the Skywalker lightsaber in The Mandalorian season 2, how does she get it? While information about the weapon has been scarce since it was lost on Bespin, the comics are starting to provide new insight about it. In Star Wars #2, it's revealed Luke had to return to Cloud City to retrieve his father's saber in order to complete his Jedi training when suddenly, he got a Force vision of a hooded figure catching it. Based on the print illustration, this was not Ahsoka, as the mysterious person does not have Togruta's head tails and the character's orange complexion.

This doesn't mean that the lightsaber won't make its way to her. For starters, Ahsoka's strong connection to Anakin could be at play here, helping her sense the missing lightsaber; it can draw her in wherever the weapon is. Seeing her locate Anakin's original lightsaber creates a parallel to Star Wars: The Clone Wars ending as well. In the show's parting shot, Ahsoka's old Jedi Master, suited up as Darth Vader, finds her beaten but somehow still working lightsaber lying in the snow. With Dave Filoni, who was the primary creative force behind The Clone Wars, also heavily involved in The Mandalorian, it's possible to see thematic and visual references to the recently-concluded animated show. Further establishing Ahsoka's place in the bigger Star Wars universe by linking her to the mystery of the Skywalker lightsaber also makes sense - especially if the studio is setting up a TV spinoff for her.

Ahsoka Can Explain How Maz Has The Skywalker Lightsaber

Maz Kanata and Skywalker Lightsaber in Star Wars The Force Awakens

While the Star Wars movies failed to provide a definitive answer as to how Maz Kanata had the Skywalker lightsaber, there's an intention from Lucasfilm to answer the mystery; they've been tackling its history and revealing new information about it through the comics for quite some time now. That said, it doesn't seem like the much-clamored answer will be provided in one go. Lucasfilm is taking their time revealing details about lightsaber's whereabouts before it ended up in Maz's hands, perhaps because the answer isn't as simple as Maz finding it. Maybe it passed through several hands, including Ahsoka's, before she obtained it. Given the former Jedi's relationship with Anakin, it makes sense that Lucasfilm wants to extensively tackle her potential connection to the mystery of his lightsaber - something that can easily be a focal point in her rumored Disney+ TV show.

Assuming Ahsoka does get her hands on the Skywalker lightsaber, Lucasfilm can easily forge a connection between her and Maz. From there, they can reveal that Ahsoka handed off the weapon to her for safekeeping in case she ended up getting killed during her future adventures or she simply wanted to part ways with it. This scenario fits well with Maz's penchant for collecting artifacts around the universe. In fact, Maz spent centuries scouring the galaxy for trinkets. It's also possible that during her post-original trilogy adventures, Ahsoka could've found her way to Takodana where she encounters Maz.

In any case, involving Ahsoka on the mystery of the Skywalker lightsaber sounds like a plausible route for the character given her history with the weapon's original wielder. While the extent of Anakin and Ahsoka's relationship was only belatedly revealed, the fact of the matter is, the latter played a significant part in the former's character arc. While Anakin is no longer around during the events of The Mandalorian season 2, this scenario allows Star Wars and Filoni to continue the former Master and Padawan's story in an unorthodox but interesting way.

As it becomes clearer that the future of Star Wars is on the small screen, thanks to Disney+, fans can expect these spin-off stories to ultimately connect into the Skywalker saga. This way, the idea that they are still part of the overall Star Wars narrative is reinforced. In some cases, Lucasfilm can also use these TV shows to fill narrative gaps and answer mysteries that were left unresolved by the movies. Case in point: The Mandalorian season 2 can provide fans new information as to how Maz Kanata had the Skywalker lightsaber in The Force Awakens.
