Lucasfilm has released a recap of The Mandalorian ahead of season 3, reminding viewers of Din Djarin and Grogu's journey so far - and of Grogu's return in The Book of Boba Fett. The dynamic between Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and his ward Grogu lies at the heart of Lucasfilm's flagship Disney+ TV show, but The Mandalorian season 2's finale seemed to indicate it had come to an end. Lucasfilm conducted an unexpected course-correction in The Book of Boba Fett, however, with Grogu returning to his found-father's side and deciding to pursue the Way of the Mandalorian instead. Lower viewership (and much poorer popular and critical reception) likely means audiences who check out The Mandalorian season 3 are unaware of that particular twist.

Lucasfilm has released a new recap ahead of The Mandalorian season 3, stressing why Grogu has been reunited with Din Djarin. The recap is divided into sections based on the separate stories, likely in large part because it then indicates which section of the story was told in The Book of Boba Fett.

The recap is a smart way of ensuring as many viewers as possible understand the basic story ahead of The Mandalorian season 3.

Disney's Recap Hints At The Story Of The Mandalorian Season 3

The recap drops major story hints ahead of The Mandalorian season 3. The final scenes remind viewers that Din Djarin is now considered an apostate by the Mandalorian sect he grew up in, because he chose to remove his mask in front of others. The Armorer offered Din Djarin a means of redemption, telling him he needs to go to the "living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore." Some have theorized this is a Mandalorian Force vergence, akin to the Dagobah cave in The Empire Strikes Back, and that Din will experience visions that commission him to accept the role of Mandalorian leader. This quest for redemption clearly lies at the heart of The Mandalorian season 3.

The recap spends surprisingly little time exploring the growing Imperial threat on the Outer Rim, perhaps hinting the focus will lie not on the Empire but on Mandalorian politics and in-fighting. Mandalorians were scattered across the galaxy after the Fall of Mandalore, and the different sects seem extremely hostile towards one another. Din Djarin now wields the Darksaber - the legendary sword whose owner is the rightful leader of Mandalore. That may well mean The Mandalorian season 3 sees him try to reunite the various sects and clans.

Viewer will note Gina Carano's Cara Dune doesn't appear in the recap at all. Cara Dune was an important character in The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2, but Carano was ultimately fired by Disney due to controversial, high-profile public statements. The character was cut from The Mandalorian season 3, rather than recast, and Cara Dune's absence from the recap suggests Lucasfilm intend to simply write her out. It is a big galaxy, after all, so not every character needs to turn up.
