Disney+'s The Mandalorian continues its run as an awards darling after scoring a nomination for best drama series at the Golden Globes. In November 2019, Disney hopped into the streaming wars with the launch of its own service boasting new content from its biggest brands. At the time, the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, was Disney+'s most buzzworthy offering, and even now, over a year later, it remains one of the service's top shows. In telling the simple but compelling story of a lone bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) who protects a powerful young child, The Mandalorian earned raves when it first premiered.

Those raves continued into The Mandalorian season 2, which aired last fall. Though there were some concerns about the series relying too much on fan service and characters from the greater Star Wars universe, the second season still managed to score critical acclaim and impress fans. An emotional and action-packed run of episodes concluded with the shocking, thrilling reveal that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) would be the one to take over little Grogu's care. Already, a Mandalorian season 3 is in the works.

Fans were not the only ones to be impressed by The Mandalorian season 2, as it has just scored its first awards nomination from the Golden Globes. Wednesday morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominees for the 2020-2021 season, and The Mandalorian nabbed a place on the best drama television series list. The official Star Wars social media account posted a celebratory message following the announcement, which can be seen down below.

In the Golden Globe nominationsThe Mandalorian is joined by The Crown, Lovecraft Country, Ozark, and Ratched in the drama series category. It's hard to gauge who could emerge triumphant from this batch, since only The Crown has been nominated (and won) before. As The Crown's fourth season was very well received, it feels like a frontrunner, but The Mandalorian could perhaps score a surprise win. Even if it doesn't, though, the fact that it is nominated is special enough. Awards shows have typically struggled to honor genre content in past years, and it speaks to a changing television landscape that both The Mandalorian and Lovecraft Country can score some love.

The Mandalorian already made its mark on the awards circuit last year, when it broke through that genre barrier to get nominated for a whopping 15 Emmys. In the end, The Mandalorian won 7 of those awards, a testament to the impressive quality of the series. It's very clear that the series has won over not only the die-hard Star Wars fans, but also those who just appreciate good television. Supporters will have to tune in at the end of the month to find out if it can score a Golden Globe.
