Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 1 finale.

Death Watch were the ones responsible for the Mandalorian becoming a foundling. The final episode of The Mandalorian's inaugural season was full of revelations, some expected and leaked in the past while others came out of left field. One of the most important yet subtle of the episode was that of how the Mandalorian became such. Previous episodes had hinted at his childhood, dating back to the Clone Wars. This episode provided more information than ever about how the now Din Djarin became a Mandalorian in the first place.

Viewers have seen small chunks of Djarin's childhood, most notably when the Separatists attacked his home and took his parents away from him. Up to this point all that was known was that he was staring down the barrel of a B2 Super Battle Droid's wrist cannon before being rescued. Obviously he survived, but who saved him? In episode 8, titled Redemption, it was revealed that the Mandalorians saved him from certain death, however it was not just any group of Mandos. It was Death Watch, a group that fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will fondly remember.

Originally led by Pre Viszla, Death Watch was a group that sought to not only retake Mandalore from the Dutchess Satine Kryze but also return the planet to its former militaristic glory. After years of trial and error in achieving such goals, the group eventually splintered into two factions. One found new leadership in Darth Maul as the Mandalorian super commandos under his Shadow Collective. Meanwhile the remaining Mandalorians rallied under Bo-Katan Kryze as the Mandalorian resistance. The height of its activity was during the Clone Wars, around the time of Din Djarin's childhood. What they have been up to during the Galactic Civil War as well as the New Republic era is a little hazier.

As indicated by the signet on their shoulder pauldrons, the group that saved Djarin from death at the hands of the Separatists was Death Watch. As indicated by their blue and grey armor, the faction was not Maul's Death Watch yet, as they didn't adopt a black and red color scheme in the fashion of their leader. At any rate, it is still unknown which planet he was rescued from or how long he spent with Death Watch, especially considering how shaky the group was at the time of his rescue. Whether or not this is something that will be explored in the coming season of The Mandalorian is a question only time can answer.

At the very least the inclusion of Death Watch in the final episode of The Mandalorian's first season is a nice nod to one of the most popular arcs in all of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. It is great to finally get closure in regards to how Djarin was saved as a child, and it is even more interesting to know that the followers of Pre Viszla were the ones who took him in as a foundling. If their inclusion is to be any more than a cameo remains to be seen, but there are many ways the story could go involving the group should Jon Favreau elect to include at the very least some members of the faction in future episodes.
