Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, "Chapter 14: The Tragedy."

The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" revealed that Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) saved Fennec Shand's (Ming-Na Wen) life on Tatooine using technology prominent in the Star Wars franchise. Fennec's return was a surprise, but it solved one of season 1's biggest mysteries. Despite targeting Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) to retrieve Boba's armor, both Boba and Fennec wound up teaming up with the Mandalorian to protect Grogu from Moff Gideon's (Giancarlo Esposito) forces. When the trio failed, Boba and Fennec agreed to assist in the rescue mission of the Child.

Before she partnered with Boba, Fennec appeared in the season 1 episode titled "The Gunslinger." The expert mercenary was on the run from the New Republic when Din went on a mission to hunt her down. Rather than go alone, Din joined rookie bounty hunter Toro Calican (Jake Cannavale). The pair found her in the Dune Sea on Tatooine, resulting in a skirmish. While Din tracked down transportation, Toro shot Fennec in the stomach with a blaster before planning to betray his partner to collect the larger bounty on him. By the time Din returned, Fennec was presumed dead after being left in the desert, but that wasn't necessarily the case.

In the closing moments of "The Gunslinger," a seemingly unknown figure approached Fennec's body. While many viewers theorized that it was Boba Fett, it wasn't confirmed until the bounty hunter's encounter with Din on Tython. As Din left Grogu in the temple atop the mountain, Boba's ship, Slave I, arrived. After a bit of a standoff, Boba revealed his motivation in acquiring his armor back. Boba, however, wasn't alone since he had Fennec acting as the sharpshooter if Din didn't comply. When the group stood down, Fennec identified herself, claiming that Boba saved her life with the use of cybernetics, and as a result, she was now in his service. Cybernetics, of course, isn't a new concept for the world of Star Wars.

The Use Of Cybernetics In Star Wars

Cybernetics are technological replacements for organic body parts such as limbs, eyes, or even organ systems. Appearing in both canon and Legends, cybernetics could be used to completely rebuild a figure's body, resulting in the development of a cyborg. In Fennec's case, it looked as though Boba implanted a biomechanical device into her midsection to repair her organs. The interface worked, keeping her alive as if she was never gravely injured in the first place.

Fennec certainly wasn't the first notable figure to receive cybernetics in Star Wars. Luke Skywalker had a prosthetic hand made from cybernetics after losing his in a duel with Darth Vader. The Dark Lord of the Sith himself was kept alive from cybernetics after the technology was used to rebuild his limbs and a life support system. This came after he acquired a cybernetic right arm in a duel with Count Dooku. As for cyborgs, General Grievous' body was cybernetic except for his parts of his brain and a few vital organs. While Boba never needed cybernetics, The Mandalorian proved that he was knowledgeable of the technology by using it to save the life of a new ally in Fennec.
