The Mandalorian star Katee Sackhoff, who plays Bo-Katan Kryze on the show, says she loves the character’s moral ambiguity. Sackhoff voiced the Mandalorian warrior in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, eventually reprising the role in live-action on The Mandalorian season 2. She’s been an ally of Din Djarin so far on the series, but some dramatic developments at the end of season 2 could mean she’ll soon be an antagonist.

When Bo-Katan was first introduced in The Clone Wars, there was no mistake that she was thoroughly a villain. As one of the Mandalorian Death Watch officers, Bo-Katan fought against the pacifist government of Mandalore, the Republic, and the Jedi. After Darth Maul usurped control of Death Watch from Pre Vizsla and killed Bo-Katan’s sister, the Duchess Satine, Bo-Katan abandoned the terrorist movement. From that point through the events of Star Wars: Rebels, she gradually grew into a protagonist, helping in the battle against the Empire and atoning for some of her past actions. Still, by the end of The Mandalorian season 2, some of the old, scheming Bo-Katan seems to resurface.

In a recent interview with Polygon, Katee Sackhoff discussed her character's moral ambiguity, saying that Bo-Katan’s past status as both hero and villain is part of what makes her so enjoyable to play.

“What I loved about the way that she was portrayed in [The Mandalorian] was that you don’t really know what she’s thinking, or where she lands, or if you’re supposed to like her or trust her. You don’t quite know if you’re supposed to root for her or not yet, and I love that. I love that gray area because she’s not so black and white.”

The end of The Mandalorian season 2 may indeed send Bo-Katan back to the role of the villain. After Din Djarin wins the Darksaber from Moff Gideon (thereby unintentionally claiming the right to the throne of Mandalore), Bo-Katan is unhappy. Her goal was to take the throne, but she’ll now need to defeat Din in combat to claim it rightfully.

A season 3 that pits Mandalorian against Mandalorian would undoubtedly be enjoyable. It could also present an opportunity to return to Mandalore, which was devastated after the events of Star Wars: Rebels by an Imperial purge. Din has plenty of enemies across the galaxy who could pop up in future seasons of The Mandalorian, but one of the most dangerous might be Bo-Katan herself.
