Baby Yoda gets another ally in Giancarlo Esposito who defends him for eating the Frog Lady's eggs in The Mandalorian season 2. Playing Moff Gideon in the Star Wars live-action Disney+ series, the overall villain of the narrative, there's not much known about the character thus far. What's clear is he wants the Child for some experiments.

Moff Gideon wasn't introduced until late in The Mandalorian season 1, only appearing in two episodes out of its first eight. This year, he's been in two outings, with the episode titled "Chapter 12: The Siege" marking his first proper involvement. While the show is being secretive about what and his fellow Imperial remnants are up to, the story follows Din Djarin and Baby Yoda instead in their quest to track down the Jedi. There is some progress with their mission, but for the most part, they've been sidetracked with other things; still, The Mandalorian continues to find ways to put the Child under the spotlight, but not all attempts have been controversy-free.

In The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2 titled "Chapter 10: The Passenger," Baby Yoda kept on munching on the unfertilized eggs of the Frog Lady. This was met with a divisive response as some thought it was gross considering that the reason why the Frog Lady was with them was so she could reunite with her husband and fertilize said eggs. When asked about his stance on the matter by EW, Esposito defended the kid, pointing out that he also needs to eat.

No, I don't think so. Baby Yoda is a very pure spirit, and yet 50 years old, so he's someone who's very highly intelligent, but also has to survive. And we need to keep that baby happy. We've all fallen in love with The Child and The Child has some compassion and is funny and is absolutely the cutest thing you've ever seen.

Lucasfilm previously defended Baby Yoda eating eggs from criticisms. They pointed out that it was meant for comedic purposes with the eggs supposedly treated like normal chicken eggs. The problem with this, however, is that The Mandalorian established how important those eggs were with the Frog Lady desperately wanting to go back home to potentially hatch them or else, their line would end. Given that context, it's difficult to look at those eggs as random munchies for Baby Yoda without thinking that in every piece he eats, he's essentially consuming a future baby frog. In any case, Mando successfully helping the Frog Lady to continue their lineage, perhaps The Mandalorian can finally move on from this debate.

All that being said, Esposito also has a point: Baby Yoda needs to eat. As a growing boy, he needs regular sustenance which could be difficult to achieve considering the situation he and Mando are in. The Mandalorian continues to establish that he has a big appetite after he stole his one-time classmate's Nevarro Nummies in the latest episode. If anything, this makes the Child more realistic with his own personalities and tendencies instead of a hollow mascot.
