With Henry Cavill continuing to talk about possible ideas for Man of Steel 2, it appears that director Christopher McQuarrie has had some serious conversations with the actor about the film and whether he would take on the project. It's not surprising given that the two of them have been working together recently, and that McQuarrie already linked himself to the proposed movie on social media.

Man of Steel was often criticized for it's slightly brooding take on Kal-El and the death of Zod. But following more darkness in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice it seemed that we might get a more hopeful spin on the most iconic of American superheroes. Justice League resurrected him and it seemed that future films involving Superman in the DCEU might be heading towards a lighter touch, reminiscent of Christopher Reeve's tenure as the big blue Boy-Scout. But while theaters and audiences wait for Aquaman and the rest of the upcoming DCEU movies, there's still no sign of a production date for Man of Steel 2.

However, during an interview with ComicBook, McQuarrie revealed that he had conversations with Cavill about ideas for a proposed sequel and that he's interested in being involved. The pair had plenty of opportunities to talk during downtime when filming Mission: Impossible - Fallout together. Referring to their conversations, McQuarrie said:

"We had a lot of time hanging out on set, and Henry's a huge fan of Superman. I can't help but talk story to people, so he told me his take on Superman and I thought it was really great, and I gave him my two cents. The tweet you're referring to is somebody asked 'Would you do it?' and I said 'Hey, they know where to find me.' Nobody's asked, but you know..."

Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

This matches up with Cavill's recent comment that he's having "a lot of conversations with people" to get the sequel started. It's also not the first time that the director has raised his hand for the project, as the tweet he refers to comes from a response he made during an online Q&A session during April, where McQuarrie directly responded that he was game to direct the Superman sequel. Despite this, he is apparently yet to enter into any official discussions about the project itself. Matthew Vaughn was the last filmmaker said to have been in talks about the film, but nothing more has been said about those plans.

While many people will link Cavill's role in Mission: Impossible - Fallout to the great Justice League mustache debacle, the action franchise could point to a possible way forward for the DCEU sequel. Cavill obviously has great respect and love for the character, and McQuarrie's obvious talent for breathtaking action sequences in the Mission Impossible films could point to an interesting combination and tone for the film. With the DCEU still holding its collective breath for reactions to its 2018/19 scheduled movies, it would still be great to see this pair take the legacy of Superman one step further.
