Amy Adams as Lois Lane DCEU

Warner Bros entered the superhero shared universe game when they officially kicked off their DC Comics Extended Universe earlier this year with the premiere of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and later with the debut of Suicide Squad over the summer. Warner Bros recently revealed a new trailer for Wonder Woman, the next film in the DCEU, with solo movies focused on Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, and The Flash in the works as well.

However, another film in development within Warner Bros' DCEU is a sequel to the actual launch pad of the shared universe: Man of Steel. Although Batman V Superman is a followup to the 2013 Zack Snyder Superman vehicle, a direct sequel to Man of Steel was reported to be in development this past summer. Now, new comments from Man of Steel and Batman V Superman's Lois Lane (Amy Adams) reveal they're working on a script for Man of Steel 2.

In an interview with Hey U Guys promoting her new film, Arrival, Adams was asked about the progress of Man of Steel 2. The actress revealed she only learned the sequel was in development from reports and said Warner Bros is currently at the scripting stages:

“I read about Man of Steel 2 when you guys did. A lot of times I find out after the fact, which is fine, it’s completely normal, it’s not indicative of anything. But yeah, I know they’re working on a script and I know it’s in the works.”

Man of Steel 2 with Henry Cavill

Reports concerning Man of Steel 2 have varied in recent years, with rumors of Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller being interested in the project generating excitement among fans, while a later report claimed the Superman-focused sequel was on "permanent hold." Still, it seems Warner Bros' plans have changed given the report that Man of Steel 2 is in "active development" was later confirmed by Clark Kent actor Henry Cavill's manager. Now, Adams' comments further confirm that Man of Steel 2 will be part of the DCEU at some point down the line.

Of course, it's likely the current state of the DCEU came into play; this year, both Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad were met by intensely negative reviews, were divisive among fans, and didn't necessarily perform as well at the box office as some may have hoped. Plus, though Warner Bros is steadily moving ahead with Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, Snyder's Justice League, and James Wan's Aquaman, a number of other films are in various stages of development, including The Flash (which recently lost its second director), Ben Affleck's solo Batman movie, and, it seems, Man of Steel 2.

Considering these projects, and that Warner Bros has a number of release dates assigned to as-yet-unrevealed DCEU films, it's likely the studio is still figuring out some of their upcoming slate. With the Warner Bros CEO admitting the DCEU movies have "room for improvement," perhaps the studio is taking its time to ensure the upcoming films are given the proper amount of time in development before they're fast-tracked to production and release. If Man of Steel 2 is currently in the scripting stages, perhaps it will join the DCEU release slate in the coming years -- though that remains to be seen.
