The Man from UNCLE Sequel In Development

Armie Hammer says he wants to do a The Man From U.N.C.L.E. sequel. Director Guy Ritchie's 2015 film reboot of the classic '60s spy television series starred Henry Cavill and Hammer as a CIA agent and a KGB operative. The Cold War rivals are forced to put aside their differences and team up to prevent Nazis from getting their hands on nuclear weapons. With the help of the daughter of a missing German scientist (Alicia Vikander), the duo set off to stop a potential global catastrophe. The film also starred Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris, and Hugh Grant.

The film received average reviews and was a box office disappointment, only grossing a little over $100 million worldwide, but went on to gain a bit of a cult following over the past five years. The film's sophisticated style, sharp humor, cool costumes, and the chemistry between the two lead actors have left fans asking for a sequel since its release. It turns out that the fans aren't the only ones who want to see it happen.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Hammer says that he would love to do a Man From U.N.C.L.E. sequel.

Trust me, if someone was like, ‘Hey, do you want to do a sequel?’ I would be like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s go!’ … I hear it. I get people being like, ‘Are you going to do a sequel?’ The answer is, ‘I hope so! I’d love to.’ At one point, Lionel Wigram, who was the producer and also who wrote the original script, he and I talked about ideas and he told me an idea that he had for it, and I was like, ‘That sounds great! Whatever your idea [is], let’s just do it!’ I don’t know, man. Keep pushing. Hopefully one day we can do it. I’d love to do it.

Armie Hammer in The Man from UNCLE

This isn't the first time Hammer has expressed interest in doing a sequel. In 2017, he revealed that he called and asked the film's writer/producer Lionel Wigram to write a sequel, to which Wigram agreed. In 2018, Hammer said he and Wigram had been discussing ideas for the sequel and believed the cast and crew would be on board if it happened. If a follow-up is in development, it's not unlikely that it could take a while, as the first film was stuck in limbo for 20 years before it was made. Multiple different scripts were thrown around, with Quentin Tarantino, Matthew Vaughn, and Steven Soderbergh nearly directing. George Clooney and Tom Cruise were in early talks to take the lead before Cavill signed on.

It's hard to tell if a Man From U.N.C.L.E. sequel could happen at this point. Even if Hammer and the cast returned, the first film's low box office numbers could prevent the movie from being greenlit. However, the movie has generated a fanbase over the past several years who want to see the spy duo return. The end of the first film even left the story open for a follow-up. There doesn't seem to be much progress being made in the sequel, but it's promising that Hammer is still interested.
