The average household cat has benefited greatly from the dawn of the internet age. Where feline hi-jinks would have previously only been witnessed by the pet's owners, the world wide web has allowed those moments of cat hilarity to be shared on a global scale. Whenever you see someone on the train giggling into their smartphone, it's a good bet they're watching a cat fall down the side of a sofa or repeatedly knock furniture onto the floor. Dogs are great too, of course, but the fact that many cats have a natural aloofness makes the times when they do actually do something amusing - rather than just watch you judgmentally from a distance -  that little bit funnier.

But whilst cat lovers are well catered for on sites such as YouTube and Instagram, there has been a significant gap in the market for those who wish to combine their love of their feline friends with their love of film. Happily, that void has now been filled.

A man from Nottingham in the United Kingdom, going by the undeniably accurate name Movie Cats, has taken to Instagram with his Burmese mog and set about recreating a variety of iconic movie scenes together. Getting the cat-treatment is the pottery scene from Ghost, American Beauty's rose petal image, "Here's Johnny!" from The Shining, the chest-busting bit from Alien and of course, the bike scene from E.T.

Although the account has only five posts thus far, a new image is uploaded on a weekly basis and the page is quickly going viral on social media. Hopefully, the cat involved won't let his new found fame get to his head and can remain grounded as his popularity rapidly grows. For his part, the cat - whose name is currently unknown - is a natural in front of the camera, managing to look menacing and annoyed in the Alien themed photo but capturing the perfect look of unconditional love in the Ghost inspired image.

As well as commanding the attention of cat-lovers everywhere, the Movie Cats account certainly has plenty of material to work through and a multitude of iconic movie moments are begging to be parodied by the owner and pet duo. The upside-down kiss from Spider-Man... The dance lift from Dirty Dancing... The scene at the beginning of The Godfather where Don Corleone is stroking a cat but with the roles reversed. The possibilities are truly endless.

With that said, Movie Cats currently ask their followers to "guess the movie" for each week's photo and as such, perhaps a shift into more obscure indie territory will be required at some point to keep the concept fresh. And although the Burmese may not be entirely aware of its new-found internet fame, hopefully its owner is providing the kitty with a rider of treats and new toys - it certainly deserves them after sitting still whilst having its head poked through a t-shirt.
