The Mamma Mia! cast reunites in the poster for the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. A film version of ABBA's hit Broadway stage musical (which launched in 1999), the first Mamma Mia! was a smash success that made nearly twelve times its $52 million budget at the global box office in 2008. There were rumblings of a movie sequel happening for years before the project became official in 2017, when Universal announced the original Mamma Mia cast would be reprising their roles in a followup written and directed by Ol Parker (Imagine Me & You).

Based on the Here We Go Again teaser trailer, the Mamma Mia! sequel picks up in real time some ten years after its predecessor. The film also moves back and forth in time, revealing the truth about what happened between Donna (played by Lily James as a young woman) and her three boyfriends all those years ago, even as her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares to become a mother herself in the present. Here We Go Again's teaser trailer also suggests the older Donna played by Meryl Streep passed away sometime prior to the events of the sequel. The teaser poster supports this, symbolizing Donna's absence by showing her trademark overalls without her. (Presumably, she's not just running around somewhere without pants.)

Streep is featured in the Here We Go Again poster (see below), so it's safe to assume that she appears in the actual film in some form. The poster also includes Streep and Seyfried's costars from the first movie, including: Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård as Sophie's three dads; Christine Baranski and Julie Walters as Donna's former bandmates; and Dominic Cooper as Sky, Sophie's fiancé (or possibly her husband by now). Take a look, below:

Joining the returning Mamma Mia! cast on the poster are James as the young Donna, along with Jeremy Irvine as young Sam (Brosnan), Hugh Skinner as young Harry (Firth), and Josh Dylan as young Bill (Skarsgård). Also along for the ride are Jessica Keenan Wynn and Alexa Davies as young Tanya and Rose (Baranski and Walters), and Andy Garcia as newcomer Fernando Cienfuegos. Last, but certainly not least, Cher herself is playing Donna's mother and Sophie's grandmother Ruby, as confirmed by the teaser trailer.

A new Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again trailer drops online tomorrow and should shed more light on how Ruby and the other newcomers fit into the sequel's plot. The movie will also include several old-school ABBA songs that weren't part of the original Mamma Mia!, so it's possible that one or more will make a brief appearance in the next trailer. ABBA, which split in 1983, only just announced they have further written and recorded their first new songs in 35 years and will release them as part of an "avatar tour project". As unexpected as it may be, it seems ABBA is on the verge of a big comeback in more ways than one.
