Director Ol Parker shares an exciting update about Mamma Mia! 3 and hints at Judy Craymer having a plan for the third installment. Parker was the writer and director of the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which proved to be incredibly popular. There have been hopes for a third installment for many years, but there has been no official movement thus far.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for his new movie Ticket To Paradise, Parker gives an encouraging update about Mamma Mia! 3. Craymer has explained that Mamma Mia! was always intended to be a trilogy, and there has been a desire for the third installment from the cast and fans. Parker may have hinted at some exciting developments in the long-awaited third film, implying that Craymer has a plan.

Ol Parker: Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always plans for it to be a trilogy. That's all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn't it be lovely?

What Could Happen In Mamma Mia 3?

Amanda Seyfried sings as Sophie in Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia! grossed over $611 million worldwide, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again earned more than $402 million worldwide. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again did an impressive job of balancing a dual story as a sequel and prequel to the original Mamma Mia!, showing the history of Donna's three famous whirlwind romances with Sam Carmichael, Bill Anderson, and Harry Bright while also exploring her daughter Sophie's life five years after the events of the first film. Many cast members have shown an interest in returning for a third Mamma Mia!, including Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgard, Christine Baranski, Lily James, and Colin Firth.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again shows Sophie dealing with her mother's death and eventually giving birth to her son. While Meryl Streep briefly reprises her role as Donna, appearing to Sophie at her son's christening, she likely wouldn't play a prominent role in the third movie. Mamma Mia! 3 could divert from the traditional path and explore the relationship between Sophie and her son instead of the mother-daughter bond. It could also explore more of Sky's (Cooper) history, Donna's relationship with her mother, and Sophie's with her grandmother, or the five years between the first two movies.

Jumping between eras in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again allowed further exploration of the past and present. Following this path again would also allow members of both casts to return. Skarsgard hopes to see his Dune co-star Dave Buatista join the world of Mama Mia!, which could be a fun addition to the cast. Mamma Mia! 3 is an opportunity to further explore the other beloved characters of Mamma Mia!, with Donna stepping back and Sophie potentially taking the spotlight as the matriarch of her family.
