If there's one positive thing to come out of the coronavirus pandemic, it's the completion of a script for Mallrats 2. The original Mallrats came out almost a quarter century ago and it seemed like getting a sequel to the cult classic was going to be a tall task. With nothing to do while the world is under quarantine, however, Kevin Smith decided to put his head down and knock out a script for the film, which he did rapidly.
Smith has been using social media and his podcasts to keep fans abreast of the quick-moving developments for his Mallrats sequel. Just over a month ago, Smith revealed his plan to complete scripts for both Mallrats 2 and Clerks 3 while he was in self-isolation. He later claimed to have drawn some inspiration from the coronavirus pandemic itself, incorporating it into the script he was writing. Just a week ago, Smith updated everyone on his progress, claiming that there were only 20 pages left to pen.
Now, the deed is done. Smith took to Instagram and announced that he had completed the script for Mallrats 2, which is now titled Twilight of the Mallrats. The script comes in at a brisk 98 pages, meaning he wrote about a fifth of the script over the past week. In Smith's words, the script is "like a brakeless bullet train." While he didn't say it in his post, the story is expected to be quite similar to the story of the original movie released back in 1995. See Smith's Instagram post, below.
In addition to announcing the completion of the script, Smith also announced which characters would be returning from the original film. He previously confirmed that Mr. Svenning (Michael Rooker) would be back and that there would be a new role for Bruce Campbell as well. Smith also said Brodie Bruce (originally played by Jason Lee), Rene (Shannen Doherty), Willam (Ethan Suplee), Gwen (Joey Lauren Adams), Brandi (Claire Forlani), T.S. (Jeremy London), Tricia (Renee Humphrey) and LaFours (Sven-Ole Thorson) would be back, though he didn't confirm whether or not the original actors would be returning for those characters. Jay and Silent Bob are also slated to appear.
Smith himself stated that the sequel likely won't be able to shoot for some time, due to the stay-at-home orders mandated across the country by local governments. He also made note of the fact that now he has to work on the script for Clerks 3. But so far, it appears to be a very productive time in self-isolation for Kevin Smith, with real progress on Mallrats 2 serving as a direct result.
