With both Hal and Walter White being played by Bryan Cranston, fans have been thorough in finding connections between the two shows. As Malcolm in the Middle is an absurd comedy and Breaking Bad is an exhaustingly depressing crime drama, the contrast between them is hilarious, and fans have definitely taken advantage of this strange juxtaposition.

Between Hal doing things that could be considered Heisenberg-level bad, comedic one-liners being taken out of context, and absurd fan theories, there’s a whole ocean of Malcolm/Breaking Bad crossover memes, and these are the very best of them.

Feeling Alive

Breaking Bad / Malcolm in the Middle Meme

One of the many similarities between Walter and Hal is that they are both pretty selfish. Though it’s to very varying degrees, Hal often kept secrets from his family whenever he wanted to pursue some self-fulfilling adventure, just as Walt did with his Meth Empire.

The meme perfectly melds Walt's explanations for his villainous actions in the finale of Breaking Bad with the strange, sometimes questionable secret antics of Malcolm In The Middle's Hal. He was good at it—he was alive!

The Costume Design

Obviously, there is such a thing as a coincidence, but how many coincidences must there be before fans catch on that the two shows very well could be connected? One of the many coincidences between the two wildly different shows was the costume design, and this meme captures two of the finest examples.

Walt and Hal both wearing green shirts might be a bit of a stretch, as it’s very much standard dad attire, but the similarities between Stewie and Gustavo Fring are jaw-dropping. From the waspy glasses to them both always being dressed in yellow, the resemblance is uncanny.

Post Season Depression

Back in the early 2010s, the year-long wait between seasons of Breaking Bad were painful, to say the least, especially when the last episode of each season ended on such massive cliffhangers. What was worse was when there was a full year-long break in the middle of season five.

This meme has taken a lyric from the They Might Be Giants-created theme tune of Malcolm in the Middle, “Boss of Me.” At the very end of the opening credits, the line goes, “life is unfair,” and that perfectly encapsulates how fans of Breaking Bad felt at the time.

Time To Cook

Malcolm in the Middle / Breaking Bad Meme

In Breaking Bad, Walter would regularly call upon Jesse and demand that they head to the lab to brew up some more blue meth, especially in the early seasons. Walt would even often literally exclaim “Jesse, it’s time to cook.” What makes this meme even better was that, in the days of using the RV as an on-the-road meth lab, Walter would take off his clothes and strip all the way down to his tighty-whities, just like the screenshot from Malcolm.

Chemistry

Breaking Bad / Malcolm in the Middle Meme

In the Malcolm in the Middle episode “Cheerleader,” Hal sits down with the boys to have the birds and the bees talk. With Hal being an awkward father who isn’t great at these serious talks, he uses two toys, a robot and a woman in a bikini, to show them how sex works.

He starts the conversation by saying, “it’s called chemistry,” and it’s not unlike something Heisenberg would say to Jesse on one of their many meth cooks. From teaching Jesse how copper works to playing with magnets, Walter and his protege spent a lot of time talking chemistry, and it didn’t take long for fans to put the two together.

Iconic Threats

Breaking Bad / Malcolm in the Middle Meme

One of the reasons Breaking Bad is so beloved is because of how quotable it is and how iconic some of the one-liners have become. One of the most famous of them all is when Saul Goodman wants to cuts ties with Walter, and Walter responds by saying “we’re done when I say we’re done.” This has been hilariously applied to Dewie dressed in protective gear, wearing virtually everything but a hazmat suit. He looks as if he’s ready to cook meth, or is at least being forced to by Hal.

A Malcolm In The Middle Prequel

Using the famous meme of Ted from Bill & Ted in which he stumbles across farfetched theories that actually start to make sense when people think about them, there’s no theory more perfect for it than the idea that Breaking Bad is a sequel to Malcolm.

It’s a theory that will continue on until the end of time, as the similarities are not limited to similar actors in similar roles and having the same dress sense, but there are literally hundreds of connections. When the show initially premiered its dramatic finale, fans speculated that Walter White may have survived. However, subsequent interviews and the release of a follow-up Netflix movie have confirmed that that the character did indeed die.

Old Joe

The various nefarious crime syndicates featured throughout the series helped Breaking Bad to depict the deepest criminal underworlds on TV. Whether it’s the cartel or the neo-Nazis, one of the most fascinating parts of the world is Old Joe and his junkyard. Larry Hankin is a character actor who often plays the same types of roles, which are generally old, dirty, and mysterious.

The actor also showed up in Malcolm in the Middle as a homeless man, and the characters look almost identical, which is yet another example that could hint at the shows being linked.

The Dark Knight Quote

Breaking Bad / Malcolm in the Middle Meme

Almost flipping the prequel idea on its head, this meme theorizes that Breaking Bad followed on from Malcolm. It uses the famous line from The Dark Knight, which is from when Batman relates to Harvey Dent, the hero of Gotham, who becomes Two-Face. The split image sees Hal all smooth and brimming with life, and, on the other side is Walter, who is literally much greyer, more wrinkled, and almost lifeless in his gaze.

The Empire Business

Breaking Bad / Malcolm in the Middle Meme

Being yet another brilliant and iconic quote from the series, in the Breaking Bad episode “Buyout,” when Jesse meets with Walter and pleads with him to sell his share of the meth business, Heisenberg replies by saying that he is in the "empire" business. It was one of those scenes showcasing that Walt had truly turned into Heisenberg.

That quote has amazingly been coupled with a shot from Malcolm in which Hal is explaining to children what he does. The real way the scene plays out is pretty grueling, as Hal talks of the stress and depression of working in a dead-end job, but the idea of him explaining the daily routine of working in a meth lab to kids is hilarious.
