Here's why Magnum P.I.'s Detroit Tigers baseball cap became such a big part of his wardrobe. Tom Selleck famously came close to playing Indiana Jones in Raiders Of The Lost Ark but missed out on the movie due to being locked into Magnum P.I. Ironically, a delay in filming on the show would have freed him up to make Raiders. Of course, Magnum P.I. proved to be a major rating success after its debut and made Selleck a star, and he's had plenty of hits outside the series.

Three Men And A Baby was a box-office smash back in 1987, and after Magnum came to an end he had a major guest role on Friends and appeared in hit 1997 comedy In & Out with Kevin Kline. He's played troubled cop Jesse Stone in a popular series of TV movies since 2005's Stone Cold, and he's currently a part of long-running CBS cop drama Blue Bloods, which will return for an upcoming eleventh season.

Magnum P.I. followed the adventures of Selleck's titular character in Hawaii and came to an end after eight seasons in 1988. It also crossed over with a couple of CBS' other big shows from that era, Simon & Simon and Murder, She Wrote. Alongside Selleck's trademark mustache, Thomas Magnum's trademark look included his Hawaiian shirt and a Detriot Tigers baseball cap. It was actually Tom Selleck's idea to gave the character that particular cap, as he's a big fan of the team.

Tom Selleck is originally from Detroit and has been a supporter of the Detroit Tigers since childhood. Outside of the cap, several nods to the team appeared throughout Magnum P.I., including an episode where Magnum encounters players "Sweet" Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell - though he doesn't recognize them out of uniform. Selleck's love of the game extended outside the show too, because when he was preparing for 1992 comedy Mr. Baseball, he arranged a three-week spring training session with the Detroit Tigers to prepare and accurately portray the sport.

As if that wasn't enough, his Mr. Baseball character ends the film as a mentor with the Detroit Tigers. While the Magnum P.I. reboot didn't keep the mustache, actor Jay Hernandez still kept the Detroit Tigers cap. While Tom Selleck considered returning for a Magnum P.I. movie during the 1990s, which fan Tom Clancy was attached to write, that ultimately didn't happen. Selleck has since ruled out ever making a cameo or guest appearance on the new Magnum P.I., however, preferring to let the reboot be its own thing.
