The X-Men's resident sorcerer Magik has just gotten the Hellfire Gala costume she deserved in stunning fan art. Most superheroes stick with broadly the same costume for years; Captain America's, for example, has barely changed since World War II. But the X-Men are an exception, with Marvel's merry mutants adopting new outfits pretty much every time they change their team roster. The current X-Men comics have lampshaded this by having the mutants switch costumes at a whim, treating them as humans would a change of clothes.

This came to a head in last years's "Hellfire Gala" event, which saw the X-Men inviting representatives from the world's governments and intelligence agencies so they could dazzle them with mutant power and technology. For Marvel's artists, this was a tremendous opportunity to imagine mutant fashion - and they got to work creating some remarkable new costumes. Some have stuck around, with Jean Grey's Hellfire Gala outfit finally replacing her Marvel Girl miniskirt. Others, however, weren't quite as impressive.

Now fan artist Angel Solórzano has decided it's time to revisit the Hellfire Gala, and give Magik the costume she deserves. He's shared a marvelous new design for Magik on social media, one that pays homage to the darkness of Limbo and even features an amusing devil's tail to signpost her Darkchylde persona. Appropriately enough, the image is rendered in the form of one of the Christian evangelists, complete with a saint's halo. "I bring you a gospel of oblivion," Solórzano has added in an amusing caption.

The design is absolutely superb, perfectly in-character for Illyana Rasputin - who's never been shy of showing off her body, given for some years now she's been noted for wearing costumes with a Power Girl-style boob window. There's even a smart homage to Illyana's Darkchylde armor incorporated into the outfit's left arm. The fiery accents around her neck complete the look, a trace of Hellfire that's probably sorcery rather than mutant power - Magik is the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo, after all. This is a truly remarkable piece of fan art, easily worthy of the comics themselves.

Solórzano has certainly timed this well. Marvel has recently conducted another X-Men election ahead of a second Hellfire Gala, and it's reasonable to assume there will be more new costumes and outfits as part of it. Hopefully the real Magik's new X-Men outfit will be as good as Solórzano's, allowing the sorceress supreme to show off her demonic style.
