New Mutants footage released at Comic Con Experience 2017, in Sao Paulo, has shown Magik wielding her Soulsword.
Josh Boone's The New Mutants is an X-Men film unlike any other. Although Boone has chosen to base the film on classic X-Men comics, he's taken a horror twist. That makes the mutant sorceress Magik an obvious cast member. Wisely, Boone has cast Anya Taylor-Joy for the role. She's certainly proved she can portray a sinister sorceress, staring in The Witch.
With the film due for release in April of next year, Fox's marketing is in full swing. Those in attendance at CCXP 2017 were given a chance to view exclusive footage, and it sounds thrilling. Here's one reaction below, from Collider's Steven Weintraub.
Just saw some new footage from 'New Mutants' where they were using a lie detector taking turns talking about each other's powers. Then a montage of shots showing a ton of action. Looks very cool and completely unlike any other superhero movie. Which is what I want. pic.twitter.com/UPmajJ9Qzf— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) December 8, 2017
By all accounts, the footage showed the New Mutants in a social situation. The teens are trying to impress one another, and they decide to use a lie detector. Most are reluctant to talk about their backgrounds, but Magik is the exception. According to Universo X-Men, Illyana is portrayed "in a totally debauched and arrogant way." While that may clash with the character's portrayal in the trailer, it dovetails perfectly with a recent teaser photo.
It seems Illyana breaks an uncomfortable silence, deciding to reveal just how her powers first manifested. Her account is chilling:
"My power? I killed 18 men. One by one."
The comment is accompanied by a flashback showing Magik's rampage. She is seen summoning a blue energy blade, which fans will immediately recognize as the Soulsword. As she does so, it seems Magik's body transforms. Her arm begins to be covered with metal, and Universo X-Men compares the effect to Colossus's transformation in the original X-Men trilogy.
It's only a brief clip, but X-Men fans will be seriously excited. In the comics, whenever Illyana summoned the Soulsword, her body became covered by eldritch armor. Boone seems to have paid homage to that idea. At the same time, he's subtly adapted it to point to Magik's relationship with Colossus. In the comics, she's Colossus's little sister.
Yet again, it's a single scene that demonstrates Boone's love of the X-Men comics. Back in October, Taylor-Joy stressed that this was the reason she was confident the movie would be well-received:
"He’s just such a fan of the comics, and he really loves them so much that he’s really interested in just making sure that we do the comics justice for the people that love the characters."
Behind all of the homages though, perhaps the most interesting part of the CCXP scene is the portrayal of Illyana's character. The trailer showed Magik as a broken, scarred teenager who clutched her Lockheed doll to her chest. It seems that, when faced with the other New Mutants, she projects a facade of strength and confidence. She's unwilling to let them see her weakness. What will happen when the broken and wounded teleporter crosses paths with the horrifying Demon Bear? Fans will find out next year.
