Magic: The Gathering hosted its annual showcase early Aug. 24, celebrating the game's upcoming 30th anniversary. Hosted by Jimmy Wong, Joe Johnson, and Becca Scott, the hour-long presentation took a look at the past year of expansions, featured interviews with game developers, and gave a sneak peek at what's coming for the Magic: The Gathering community for the rest of 2021 and beyond. This look ahead included announcements about Magic: The Gathering crossover sets coming in 2022.

The announcement comes on the heels of a recent collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, two immensely popular Wizards of the Coast properties. Past crossovers with external partners have included Secret Lair drops for The Walking Dead and Godzilla. Additionally, recent releases have included the Strixhaven School of Mages, Kaldheim and Modern Horizons 2, all expanding on existing lore within the Magic: The Gathering universe.

2022 is set to be a big year for the game, as Magic: The Gathering's upcoming roster includes several planned crossovers with some of gaming's top franchises, as well as revamping classic Magic stories. The sets also vary widely in genre, as Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty will bring players to the future plane of Kamigawa, and Streets of New Capenna will bring urban fantasy to life, allowing players to engage in the criminal underworld. Additionally, the classic world of Dominaria, first released in the Magic: The Gathering universe in 1992, is making a comeback in Dominaria Unlimited. The plane is also getting an expansion with The Brothers' War, described by Wizards of the Coast as a "plane-spanning conflict" worthy of 30 years of play.
