Magic Mike's Last Dance has been upgraded from an HBO Max movie to a theatrical release, with a Superbowl weekend release date. Magic Mike has been a successful film series for Warner Bros, with the first movie in 2012 grossing $167 million worldwide and the sequel Magic Mike XXL grossing $117 million worldwide in 2015. A third film was announced as an HBO Max Original film and sees Channing Tatum reprise his role and director Steven Soderberg return to the director's chair.
Now, in the shake-ups happening at Warner Bros. Discovery and with CEO David Zaslav's commitment to theatrical releases, Magic Mike's Last Dance has been upgraded from a streaming release to a theatrical release. According to Deadline, the film is set to open in theaters on February 10, 2023, which is the weekend of Super Bowl LVII. This release date is a departure from the franchise as both Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL opened the last weekend of June heading into the Fourth of July holiday.
Super Bowl weekend is often a slow weekend at the box office, but Warner Bros. Discovery might be positioning Magic Mike's Last Dance as counterprogramming for the big game and as a potential Valentine's Day date movie later in the week. Currently, the only other film slated for release that weekend is the romantic comedy It's All Coming Back To Me, another movie wanting to capitalize on the early Valentine's day weekend. Magic Mike's Last Dance will face competition the following week with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which is positioned as the direct lead into Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
