Capcom's most famous Street Fighter characters will soon be crossing over into the multiverse of Magic: The Gathering in a new Secret Lair set, and their custom cards have now been unveiled. Wizards of the Coast announced the official crossover last year, along with other upcoming crossover sets including MTG: The Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000.

The Street Fighter series is no stranger to inter-universal crossovers. Even before the idea of crossovers became as pervasively popular as it is today, Capcom had been throwing its famed fighters into the ring against other IPs for decades. Street Fighter's many warriors have gone up against the Marvel universe, the classic anime characters of Tatsunoko, and other big names in the fighting genre like SNK and Tekken. Still, that's only scratching the surface; Capcom has continued to license out its characters for various crossovers all the way up to today, and recent examples have included Street Fighter crossovers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Fortnite.

As revealed by IGN, later shared by IGN editor Tom Marks on Twitter, the first look at the Street Fighter Secret Lair set coming to Magic: The Gathering gives fans a taste of what's to come, courtesy of Wizards of the Coast. The set will include eight legendary creature cards based on each of the original World Warriors from the roster of Street Fighter 2. There will also be a ninth card that is currently being kept secret, but Wizards of the Coast says it will be revealed during the upcoming Capcom Pro Tour. All of the cards in this Secret Lair set have just gone up for pre-order as part of the February Superdrop sale, and will be released on July 29, 2022.

As upcoming new additions to Magic: The Gathering, the Street Fighter cards have all been designed to be mechanically varied and unique, much like the actual characters. Each one's abilities are reminiscent of the original character's moves, including Guile's charge counter options or the Multikicker keyword on Chun-Li. Ryu even has the Untap symbol, which has only been used for one other card and is meant to evoke the quarter-circle motion of the Hadouken. The crossover has been two years in the making and Wizards of the Coast experimented with numerous different characters and elements from Street Fighter.

Capcom has green-lit many crossovers in the past, but this might be one of the more unconventional ones. That's not to say Street Fighter Magic cards are a bad idea; on the contrary, they seem remarkably clever. The red, white, and blue mana cost to summon Guile and text on the cards are witty nods to the longstanding Street Fighter series, while also being powerful, interesting cards. Fans will have to wait until Capcom Pro Tour this weekend to see the ninth card, but that's just one of the surprises in store at the tourney - Capcom is also counting down to another big announcement.
