A Magic: The Gathering designer has asked fans if they’d want to see a potential Star Wars crossover with the popular collectible card game. Magic: The Gathering has been steadily increasing its number of crossovers in the past year or so, which is partially thanks to its new Universes Beyond initiative that brings other popular IPs into Magic: The Gathering. Just last month, an MTG x Fortnite crossover was released as part of Universes Beyond’s Secret Lair drop series. The mini-set included a total of 14 cards, including nine reskins of existing cards and five lands.

The popular collectible card game has been around for almost 30 years now, so it may seem daunting for some people to even consider getting into, especially when there are thousands upon thousands of cards available in the game along with a number of formats that players can use them in. There’s also the cost of entry to consider, especially for those wanting to competitively play in certain formats. However, there are a few Magic: The Gathering formats for new players that are relatively easier to get into.

Magic: The Gathering head designer Mark Rosewater (via TheGamer) responded to a question on his Blogatog blog asking about a potential MTG crossover with the Star Wars franchise. The designer answered with a question, asking “would people like to see a Star Wars set?” While the responses to Rosewater’s question have been mixed, it has definitely started a conversation on which crossovers fans want to see and the Universes Beyond initiative in general. In another question, Rosewater was asked if anime or manga crossovers were possible with Universes Beyond and the designer responded by saying that fans should assume that “anything is potentially on the table” when it comes to the Universes Beyond.

Could Magic: The Gathering Get a Star Wars Universes Beyond Set?

In spite of all the crossovers that have been announced so far, Wizards of the Coast is still hard at work with Magic: The Gathering’s main sets. According to the company, its MTG Dominaria United will include real Legends cards. The upcoming set is bringing the game’s current story back to Dominaria, the plane where many of its early storylines were set and Wizards of the Coast is including real cards from the Legends set from 1994 in Dominaria United Collector Boosters as a bonus. The classic set was the first to introduce Legendary creatures as well as multicolored cards, among others.

A crossover between Magic: The Gathering and Star Wars would definitely be interesting to see, especially with all the new stories and characters that the Star Wars franchise has introduced lately. While official sign-off on such an idea is far from confirmed at this stage, Rosewater's comments have raised eyebrows within both the fandoms, and it's certainly something that many would like to see in the future. For now, fans can only hope - and keep an eye out for any potential related announcements.
