BOOM! Studios is bringing Magic: The Gathering to the world of comic books with a stunning set of variant covers featuring some of the game's most beloved characters. The latest depicts the ghost assassin Kaya, who is set to take a prominent role in the new series.

Picking up on plot threads from the hit card game's story, MAGIC #1 from writer Jed MacKay and artist Ig Guara will follow fan-favorite planeswalkers Vraska, Ral Zarek, and the previously mentioned Kaya. Though initially relegated to minor roles, this trio has risen to prominence after recent storylines saw them become guild masters on the plane of Ravnica. This new comic starts with an assassination attempt on the trio which also endangers the life of the game's most recognizable character, Jace Beleren. This attempt to destabilize the plane of Ravnica leads the three planeswalkers on a journey to the wild Zendikar and across the multiverse which BOOM! teases will lead to an encounter with one of the game's wildest characters.

Though it's unknown who exactly BOOM! is referring to, the wording suggests the character will be a deep pull from Magic's decades of continuity. While fans may have to wait quite some time to learn who that is, the released Hidden Planeswalker variant covers hint at the appearance of the powerful necromancer Liliana Vess and the vampire lord Sorin Markov. Now, Kaya is joining the other two black mana planeswalkers with her own variant cover.

Keen-eyed fans of the card game will note that this cover from artist Taj Tenfold depicts Kaya resting after slaying an army of Dreadhorde soldiers from the game's War of the Spark expansion. Kaya has risen to quite a prominent place in the game recently, as she played an important role in the aforementioned War of the Spark expansion, its sequel novel Forsaken, and MTG's most recent expansion, the Norse-infused Kaldheim. Unfortunately, fans shouldn't expect any of those stories to impact this one, as it's been declared non-canon. Though some might be disappointed to learn of the comic's dubious place in the game's larger canon, this frees the comic's creative team to craft their own story without worrying about where it fits into continuity.

Regardless of the continuity though, the set of variant covers all perfectly capture the character of the three depicted planeswalkers. It is curious that planeswalkers who all use black mana were chosen for these covers. While Kaya is one of the comic series' main characters, the released plot summary gives no hints to Liliana or Sorin's involvement. It's possible that each issue's variant covers will focus on depicting the planeswalkers from one of Magic's five colors. Fans can hope that if BOOM! Studios do go in that direction, that future Magic: The Gathering variant covers are as gorgeous as these. Look for MAGIC #1 when it releases on April 7th!
