The Magic: The Gathering multiverse is expanding even further beyond its collectable card game origins and even past the initial comic book breakout from BOOM! Studios with a new one-shot Magic: Master of Metal. BOOM! Studios first announced its partnership with Hasbro, Inc. and Wizards of the Coast LLC in the development of the comic series Magic ahead of its April release. Now, a new chapter is unfolding in this multiverse-travelling magical adventure!
Magic: The Gathering first debuted in 1993 as a collectable card game and has been beloved by fans ever since. That love sparked the comic series Magic and has now expanded with this latest one-shot. Magic chronicles the stories of those gifted with the “spark,” an ability that allows them to tap into the raw power of Magic and travel across the multiverse. These people are known as the Planeswalkers. The new single issue book based in Magic lore, Magic: Master of Metal, features the infamous Tezzeret, the Master of Metal, who is on a mysterious dark quest that will ripple through all the realms of Magic.
Tezzeret’s storyline begins after he breaks free of his former master Nicol Bolas, the God Pharaoh of Amonkhet. Now, the insidious and skillful inventor is taking to the multiverse for a dark purpose that has yet to be revealed, living up to his title as Master of Metal and manipulating anyone to claim his mysterious prize. “Tezzeret is one of those cerebral villains who’s got plans within plans,” said BOOM! Studios editor Kathleen Wisneski in a press release announcing the one-shot. Aside from the intriguing plot points present in the initial release, the creative team behind the book is certainly cause for excitement. Magic: Master of Metal #1 will be written by the talent behind Transformers: Windblade Mairghread Scott with art by acclaimed illustrator Jorge Coehlo, who previously worked on Rocket Raccoon, as well as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ French Carlomagno and Kadath’s Jacques Salomon. Colorist Francesco Segala and letterer Ed Dukeshire are also contributing to this new story.
“I am thrilled to be writing in the Magic comic book universe with the new one-shot Master of Metal!” said Scott in the BOOM! Studios release. “If you feel a cold prickle of dread crawling up your spine, don’t worry; everything is going according to plan.” The main plot point given to fans is the meticulous and conniving nature of Tezzeret, the Master of Metal. While already an established villain in Magic lore, fans will now have the chance to see the multiverse from his perspective with a deep dive into the psyche of a multiversal madman bent on achieving his goals at any cost.
“Magic fans who already love to hate Tezzeret will appreciate the smart exploration of his psyche; and anyone new to MTG will understand why Tezzeret is one of the most popular characters in a vast multiverse,” continued Wisneski describing the upcoming project. This series is aimed to be accessible to new fans who are curious about Magic: Master of Metal but haven't played Magic: The Gathering or don’t have a firm understanding of the deep lore behind the new story. Magic: Master of Metal will be available November 2021.
